Male plant traits early on

Hey guys/gals,

I'm just curious to know other people's opinions or experiences on "traits" in male plants early on in veg before sex starts to show such as:

-No smell at all.
-Very rapid growth, especially side branches.
-Size of fan leaves

Are any of these a cause for concern? especially when your seed doesn't come from a very reputable company, but should be feminized

Would love to hear your opinions and thoughts on this.

Cheers!

Every plant acts differently. Don't waste time seeing if it's male or.female by how it grows, cut off 1 small clone and set it into 12/12 light,

Thanks @Hrenklin I totally get that and agree, but I was only asking if this is something that people have noticed or is proven fact.

Noticed?

Some traits i have seen in seedlings that turned female (not 100%)

-desire to branch at 1st few nodes
-over all wider at bottom than top

Some traits i have seen in seedlingd that turned male (not 100%)

-lack of early branching
-bolster wider canopy on top

As mentioned above, phenotypic expression could have these traits on the opposite gender. I have grown tall females and short males. Bushy males and leggy females. Preflowers help a ton. ;) just wait it out.

As said above one of them "sometimes or quite often" but not all the time, usually the male show first but I had one that waited 3 or 4 days after the female when I had flipped 10 days before. A lot of the times they will show before you flip even, but one of them don't guess and wait it out until it does tell you as could throw away a awesome stray pheno lady thinking it was a guy w/o knowing it was or not.

disrespectful.
know it all.
too stupid to realize the dumb luck that's saved them til now

... oh early male plant traits ... never mind carry on

what a fine topic friend,, great q

and some good info givers chimin in here too

i feel i have watched enuf porn to offer opinions,, cannabis porn of course

i have grown out plenty of photos over the last few years,, studying hard core for indicators of sex

and i have nailed it down to confirmation at the oh so earliest indications of sex,,

the usual way

the first signs of the flower

never have i noticed any other indicators, period

and i just mean that i have not noticed,, not that there is nothing to see

just me tho,,

cheers friend

Thanks @nivek and everyone else's comments here.

I have just been curious to know what other growers on the forum thoughts and opinions are on this topic. I certainly know the only true way of knowing forsure is once the plant starts showing it's sex, whether it be from the plant reaching sexual maturity on its own or by flipping into a flowering light cycle or by taking a cutting and flipping that clone in a 12/12 flower cycle.

It seems that many people online (not on the forum) are agreeing that male plants tend to grow faster and taller in the first stage of growth than females do, and the internodal spacing tends to be further apart than females. This is where i disagree because I have had female plants grow fast and tall like this during veg, and also with node spacing far apart and less branching near the bottom and more closer to the top so I have to disagree with what people are saying online with this topic.

I have a sativa strain that will grow 6"+ nodes as a female. Some traits are genetic. With most herb being a hybrid now, those traits could carry over and express themselves. My sativa female grows taller nodes than an indica male. So no, node spacing is definitely not the way. If you have taller nodes on one than the other...AND they are from the same seed stock...then maybe. You would need something to compare and contrast it to.

There are 2 traits I've noticed in male plants over the years.

Some male plants wont show sex before the females if in the same room with females.
(this is my sure bet its a male)

Male plants tend to grow taller and lankier.

I also agree @Patient puffer I grew a sativa dominant strain and 2 other mostly indica strains. One out of the 4 indica turned out to be male, but looked almost identical to the 3 other females throughout vegging which had pretty tight internodal spacing. Compared to the satitva though you could probably fit like 4 of the indica nodes in just 1 sativa node spacing

This has been rather interesting though, hearing what other's opinions and thoughts are on the matter...thanks everyone!!

Hey @bobrown14 that's very interesting you say that Now that I think about it most often times when a male has popped up in my grow was after the females started showing sex first. They would generally take longer to show their balls vs pistils.

I cant count the times I up-potted males thought they were females and put them in the flower room only to be surprised 2 weeks later.

Now, IF I cant fer sure 420% say its a female it aint getting up-potted or put into flower.

Anyone ever try getting a chemical leaf test done just for the hell of it? I read they are somewhat cheap but why even spend the $10-$20 in the first place. If you are purchasing your seeds from a top notch reputable company you shouldn't have to really worry right?

last few times, including right now with a cpl chocolope crosses, for photo plants i try to sex it in a solo cup,, ,, i have succeeded last few attempts.

it's hard to water and feed em enuf in a solo cup but can be done, so i am finding

makes for an ugly solo cup plant but very quickly recovers after transplanting

usually need to be six weeks in a solo cup,, ha,, could be a movie there,,
