Haight Solid State vs. H.G.LED

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Thanks for the advise ss and I will try to holdout but, not that long trying to start a grow as soon as possible. I will take a look at the journal you suggested and ask for advise. Also do you think a t5 flourscent light with cfls would do the job. Once again thanks and you now have another follower as long as you post :)

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Congrats on coming back to growing!

When I came back I was overwhelmed. All kinds of new equipment, growing methods, and strains I'd never heard of.

I found the best way to learn about stuff and get caught up was to read grow journals. The knowledge and experience shared here is priceless.

I think you showed a ton of restraint in not jumping ahead. Watching it in real-time seemed interminable.

If you're not in a rush to get started, I'd hang around a bit and check out some journals. Try to find grows on the same scale as you're planning and see what people are using and what kind of results they're getting.

thanks Durango, nice to meet you ;)
Time dilation, timeless post yet brings me back to then.:welcome:

It's nice to know that I'm not the only escapee from the geriatric ward who started growing again after over a decade. The technology has come a long way, and there is a learning curve.:roorrip:

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Hey SS does the eyeclops only plug into the tv?

Back when I got mine, there was only one model and it has a small built-in screen plus a video-out jack for TV, but now there's more than one model, so if you're gonna get one, make sure it's got the features you want before ordering.

For just doing trich checks on the plants, the built-in screen works fine, but for posting pics here, I like the better focusing I get when I output the signal to a TV.

I agree with that, but on the other hand, not much has changed under the sun as far as the basics of what a plant needs to grow and thrive.

I love technology and gadgets, so expending the energy to learn about the new stuff wasn't a burden for me, but it's still possible to keep things simple and inexpensive for the personal grower who just wants to grow some herb.

There are lots of grow journals here that focus on budget and simplicity, so if that's what someone is looking to do, that info is here also.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

I thought the buds would be dry enough to post final dry weights, but they aren't quite there yet. We've had some rain and the humidity slowed the process down a bit.

I'm anticipating that they'll be ready for final weigh-in this coming weekend.

I appreciate everyone's patience and thought I would post some miscellaneous pics in the meantime.

First, a little root-porn, cause all us dirt jockeys got hydro root-porn envy ;).

Now some bud close-ups I took with my camera and macro lens.

I'm still figuring out how to take some bud pics with the Eyeclops and USB scope, and hope to post some of those soon also.

Final dry weights this weekend ;)

thanks all!

The trichs are shaggy, and the buds are very sticky. They literally stick to my fingers and everything else they touch as if covered with glue.

This is the first time I've grown VK, and the first time I've done a complete grow with LED's, so I don't know why they look like that, but yeah, it's a good thing ;).

<--- Dirt root envy !

Those roots look extremely healthy !

Will you please remind me what your final potting mix was ?

And

If/What would you change about it ?

I'll let SS give you his potting mix.....but if you want roots like that, it's really quite simple:

Perlite. You can't have too much! In fact, I grow in 100% perlite.....the roots are fantastic.

Our beloved plant is quite happy growing in pure perlite, promix, volcanic rock, etc.

Hey DocBud,

I completely agree.
My current grow was my first time using FFOF and at first I was advised to cut with approx 25% perlite.
Well that just didn't cut the mustard , I was having up to ten days between waterings .
Now, my final mix is FFOF, FFLW, Verm, and perlite with mostly FFLW and perlite.

SS you used FFOF for this if I'm not mistaken , IYO is 25% perlite an undercut ?

I feel like my next grow will have to be some sort of soil-less , how often do you water in pure perlite .

I had a difficult first grow due to the poor drainage of FFOF. FFOF needs to be amended with at least 50% perlite. I now grow in perlite (really chunky #4) with a little coco and I water every other day. The watering frequency will increase during flowering. I use hempy buckets which, when coupled with the right medium, are impossible to over water. The only problem I have with my system is that it is currently drain to waste which is not environmentally sound. I will be making changes to recirculate the nutes and mix in some organics during flowering.

I went from feeling totally at the mercy of the soil to being in total control of my plants with the move from FFOF to perlite + coco.

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Great pics bro! I am struggling to get bud shots like that. Its harder than one would think to get good light and a steady shot of a small thing like that.

Can't tell from the pics, were the HSS ones a little more amber?

Man this journal is just awesome right up to the last drop!

Re: 420 Consumer Reports Competition - Haight Solid State vs. Hydro Grow LED

Quick follow up:

I'm still learning about the LEDs, but is it possible that given the difference in weight. The HSS light is better in flowering vs veg for the HGL. I also seem to like the tris from the HSS a little more for some reason.

One other question for LED folks - has there been any evidence that certain strains respond to certain spectra better?

TIA

I also wondered about reusing the runoff but worry about the possible buildup of salts or the mix being too weak. Any opinions or experience with this? I know most hydro systems reuse the nutes so why not in a hempy? :peace:

nice work SS. . . sea of trichs!!! love it! both lights did a fine job in that department.

And soon we'll be hearing how they taste, smell, and effect ;)
