Tokists' DWC Bagseed Grow Log

Hey man, your setup looks sweet. I don't know much about deep water cultures or hydro in general so I can't comment much on that. It looks really neat is all I can say :) lol! Your babies look nice man. I can't wait to see them grow, I love how hydro setups keep everything contained in such a tidy manner.
If I may comment on your light upgrade plans. I think you definitely need more watts for flowering in there. 400 sounds like a good number. If opening the door of your closet is your only way of venting, might I suggest exhausting a cool tube outside of the closet? If you can do that, I'm sure you'll have temps under control. As long as you can sneak a flex duct a foot or two out of the closet and vent elsewhere, I think you'll be premium. If your apartment/house 's temps are maintained comfy for humans ~74'sh, then you closet won't go over 78. I've used a cool tube with an HPS before, and it will surprise you if connected to proper centrifugal exhaust. You've done great so far, if budget allows, then I say go with a cooled 400W and tweak the exhaust to push that hotness OUT! Be sure that you need a centrifugal exhaust fan for this as your flex duct will have quite the number of bends and turns to exhaust away from the closet.
Otherwise, I think you should consider an alternative to HID's. CFL's and LED's seem to be doing the trick for me, but every single experienced grower I've asked says HID is the way to go, soo.. it's all about what's best for you and your situation. Cheers bro :grinjoint: Happy growing! I'll be following your progress.

thanks for the compliments, bro! i suppose the grass always looks greener on the other side. everyone elses grow looks way more badass than mine, lol.

you mentioned something about flex-hose or... flex-cooling....? if they made a bendy exhaust pipe for the cooltube that might just work. i'd really love to go to 400W, but without making some serious mods to that closet i dont think i can keep temps low. cracking the door won't be an option after awhile.

once my hydro shop guy gets off vacation so i can pickup my 150W hps, i'll set it up and see what kind of temps im dealing with and we'll go from there. ideas fluctuate from one minute to the next, there's really no point in figuring stuff out til it happens ;)

A couple of things I forgot to comment on.. LOL @ watching the plants. I just smoke a joint and sit next to them sometimes. It gets weird, even my dog looks at me like I'm crazy haha. Everybody does it.
And I have a question, I hope this isn't rude or anything, but why are you going with bagseeds from reg weed? You have an awesome setup, I say that deserves to have some top notch Kush growing in there man emm emmm! lol.. just a thought, I don't mean to be a dick or anything.. Cheers bro! :grinjoint:

If the door has to be closed eventually, that can be during the 12 hour dark period. If you can maintain a cracked door (enough to let our a 6" duct) for 12 hours of light, then I assure you, 400 won't give you trouble (granted you provide decent exhaust). This ventilation system will also come in handy if you decide to add a carbon filter down the road.
If this is not an option, then LED's might be a good idea. CFL's are good too, but LED's will give much more intense light and will run cooler than CFL's. I picked up some 300 watters from craigslist for a great deal. People sell their stuff for half the price after one harvest if they quit growing.
I'm NOT an experienced grower. Just tossing my opinion, hoping it would help.

im using bag seed because i can't afford to pay a hundred bucks for five or ten seeds that may or may not work. so far, i've had decent success with germinating my seeds, but when 75% of them don't make it, i find it hard to justify paying a hundred bucks for it.

even if 100% make it, it's still a hefty price to lay down.

besides, if this grow fails for some reason, it wont be a big deal. it's only bagseed ;)

perhaps when the VA gets off their ass and sends me my post 9/11 GIB benefits, i'll spring for some good seeds. i find myself steering more towards strains with color in em. i'd love to grow some purple weed. all my friends would shit their pants! they've only ever seen green dirt weed. poor bastards.

i'm thinkin' maybe an autoflower strain! there's one called pineapple express that's sposed to be pretty good. then again, i hear they dont taste as good as reg flowering strains and they dont yield as much.

sigh...

Subbed my friend! Looks like a nice deal you have. Ill keep watching. The temps can get crazy when dealing with a closet setup. You asked on my journal about my temp issues. I have them stable. Many folks will say different things on temp and the effects. In my new space I get 79-81 with the door slightly ajar. I run my AC at 74 all day every day. South Florida stays hot and humid. So South I can see Cuba on a clear day with Binoculars!! anyway if your set up allows you too keep a closet door open a bit that will help. I would really suggest fans and more than two. My Autos do not seem to mind high temps. Believe me when I say this: CFL's will heat up!!! Not any where near HID's but the ballasts will give off some heat. I run a small fan at times at ballast height. If I keep my closet door completely closed the temps hit 90 easily. Thats with three fans running. Hence the need for proper ventilation. ISmokes had some good info for ya. seems some other smart folks have showed up to your grow as well.
I've been rambling! Sorry! My damn cat keeps running over my lap top!.

damn, 91 degrees! ugh... i might just bite the bullet and cut a hole in the sheetrock at the top of the closet and vent the light straight up. ive got enough handy skills to cover it up before i move. but again, we'll see what happens when it happens. these seeds probably come from plants in mexico and i don't imagine their genetics have problems with high heat....

im so glad i've got so much experience helpin me out! you guys rock!

91 is why I keep the door open a bit!! My tent will arrive soon and I will have an inline fan. I'm gonna cut a hole as you may and vent up top to my attic. If need be you could always put in a dummy recessed light when you leave or simply do a small drywall repair.

day 9

not much going on today. the last two seedlings finally broke the surface and are looking quite well. i noticed that the rest of them were lookin a bit dry. then i realized it'd been over a week since i last gave them water. there was tons of condensation on the bag yesterday evening so i didn't think it was runnin low but i guess i was wrong.

you see the one on the top left? the little sprout leaves are turnin yellow. might not be able to see it here, but they're all lookin pretty thirsty.

here's a closer-up of the top left one:

i added some water to the cubes and i'll check em again in a couple hours.

the two main babies are healthier than ever. they haven't really grown much but i imagine that's a result of adapting to their new environment the other day.

aaand... some root porn!

i get the feeling that that's the equivalent to kiddie porn. not much too look at. (bazinga!)

once them roots are more established, these babies are gonna take off.

a dummy recessed light... dude! you're a freakin genius! the wheels are turning now... gonna google some parts and see what it'd cost me to put a well-cooled 400W hps in that closet. not even really sure what to look for though. cooltube? and some venting... tube?

You are going to need ventilation of some kind, along with some way to control the smell.
I take it you are in an apartment and don't want to cut hole in their door.
You could buy a cheap one to use in it's place so you can put in ventilation.
I assume the apartment is climate controlled, so simply moving air in and out of the closet
should keep the temps down. You still have the problem with the smell. Some sort of carbon
filter is probably going to be a must.

I would look into an LED if you can afford it. I use one in my veg cab and don't need forced ventilation.
Simple vents at the top and bottom and natural draft keeps it cool enough.

LED is a bit out of my price range. i could very well afford it, don't get me wrong, but my wife has put me on a budget pending the success of this grow. which is fair. no reason to spend a grand on all this equipment if it doesn't pan out. i tend to lose interest in projects....

can you recommend an LED light that's under 200 bucks (including shipping) that'll give me the yield a 400W HPS can?

i was looking at the grow tube package from one of our sponsors. it's perfect! but their cost is ridiculous. and 60 dollars for shipping? ouch! a similar product on amazon goes for a hundred bucks less and the shipping is half that.

i'm gonna hit up another hydroponic shop in a bit and see what they have to offer. i hate ordering stuff like this off the internet anyways. if its broke, you gotta wait that much longer to get it rectified.

I don't go to hydro shops unless I need something fast. They're always ridiculously overpriced. If I can wait till it ships from the "internets" lol, then I'll do it. Amazon or ebay usually have good deals on these stuff Tokist. To sum up your needs: 400W Switchable Ballast, then a 400W Super HPS and a 400W MH. They come in packages bro, look for them to save some money. (PS: if it's over 150, you're paying too much, cuz I got a ballast/hps/mh combo for $160 and it's a 600W).
For keeping it cool you will need a cool tube (or air cooled hood reflector as long as it's airtight), a flexible duct, and a fan.
I would check out craigslist for some stuff from local folks as well. I always go to craigslist first. You'd be surprised by how many people sell their grow equipment on craigs.
Also, if smell is an issue, you will definitely need a carbon filter when the skunkiness kicks in :).

as much as id like to plug a hose into a cooltube and route it into the ceiling, i probably won't be able to. i know there're hella cheap light setups at amazon, i drool over them all the time ;) there're so many different combos and the prices are so inconsistent that i wouldn't know which one to get.

as much as i hate to say it, i'm probably going to have to go with the little hydrofarm 150w. i noticed they make a 250w as well. and for 30 bucks they ALSO make an exhaust fan that mounts on top of it. hmmm....

"can you recommend an LED light that's under 200 bucks (including shipping) that'll give me the yield a 400W HPS can?"

Sorry, I haven't seen any in that range. I have a 90w solid state one that is suppose to be equal to a 400w hid.
I have doubts it's that good but it sure worked fine vegging 3 plants. Since my tent is still full with an abused mother
that is going to take a few more weeks I'm letting her 3 babies flower under that LED just to see if it will.

Sears and Home Depot sell hydroponic supplies believe it or not. It's all online though.
