Update without photos :(
Sorry about that, but I'm having a problem uploading my photos as the moment. Everything seems to go fine--I get the file icons with the checkmarks--but when I click the "Upload/Submit" button, it comes back with:

I have a bug report in on the Firefox bug report forum, anyone have any ideas? I'll upload photos as soon as I can. In the meantime...

Grow Report:

Growing is good in Happyland. My seedlings are now robust little plants, with the 5th leaf pair just appearing. I'm nipping them off for their first topping, in accordance with the Famous ScrOG Tutorial that I am following. It uses two toppings and LST to form very low srogs--he has his screen at 4", I think I'll go higher from my first scrog. More on that on my next post--a grow room update.

All my plants are robust and growing, even the special-need Black Jack at 12 0'clock. I under-illuminated my the first couple weeks and had spindly stems and, besides turning the fan on them, I over-compensated with the lights, gradually lowering them and looking for burn. After a few day's at 15", I saw what looked like burn on my center plant, so I backed off 4" to 19", and the bleaching has gotten no worse, and everyone seems happy. I'm actually getting skunky whiffs. :cheesygrinsmiley:

The plants continue to differentiate themselves in the same ways, with the Master Kush--though admittedly 5 days older than the others--continues to impress with its size and robust shape, with purple branches. One already has secondaries coming up, before topping! The Wonder Woman seems equally robust, though younger, with broad leaves and a solid stem. Pure Power plant is just a little less robust, and Black Jack continues to trail in size, though getting stronger all the time.

Okay, I'm tired so I'll stop here, but stay tuned for an update on my grow build--I have some serious tote over-thinking going on, and want to share my ideas and treaks. :grinjoint:

Everything looks good so far. Keep that PH a little lower for DWC I believe. They like lower PH than soil if I recall, 5.5-6.5 I think. I'm planning my DWC right now actually. Will be interested to see how you progress!

Hey I love your Avatar, that was a great movie
I am a 1st time DWC grower myself, I just flipped them into flower on Mothers Day. I am by no stretch of anyones imagination a qualified expert on DWC and do not claim to know chit but I did happen to notice you have 9 set up for your grow. I also noticed you mentioned you got another tent coming. Hope it is either a big tent or you are planning to flip them when they are relatively small because if not, your going to out grow your grow area pretty quick.
Here is a picture of one of my plants, it takes up a 4x4 foot print out of my tent by itself and it drinks 3 gallons per day every day
IMG_201315.jpg

here is another one that I have a make shift SCROG to keep it from growing out of control. It was only 18 inches when I flipped her, had I let her grow unchecked she would be well over 3 foot tall by now.
IMG_199927.jpg

Granted it takes a bit before the explosive growth comes but when it takes off, all I can say is I hope you have a big tent, I have a 5 x 10 tent with 4 plants and 5 LEDs and I am running out of room. Remember if you SCROG it, you have to be able to lift the whole plant in order to change out your res and to clean your buckets. I have a very nice 4 x 3 foot SCROG I used for soil grows but have not figured out how to build one so I can lift my bucket tips off so I can clean my buckets and do my res changes.

Hope you have a good plan set up because I am on plan "D" already and will most like be on plan "G" or "H" before I am finished
Best of luck my friend

Check out this journal here. He's got individual screens attached to buckets. Pretty cool set up.

Thanks Kaivorth!

Stay tuned, it should be an interesting trip. ;)

I hope I get my photo uploading problem fixed soon, because I want to share the tote and scrog setup I've come up with.

Happy growing!

Hi OG!

First things first: :adore:
:)

Whew, awesome grow!

Thanks for the compliment on my avatar--I figure Happy Jack and The Dude are appropriate for a grower. :)

Okay, looking at the tree you grew in a 5 gal bucket, I it looks like I've overdone things a it. Oh well, live and learn, lol. I'm planning two 4x4 tents, each with 4 plants, each in a 17 gallon tote.

Oh well, my solution may be to flip them early, take clones, and do quick harvests. If I could grow like you, I could certainly get by with 5 gallon buckets. I had to clean myself up after gazing upon that luscious, fertile root ball.:tokin:

What are you using for an air pump and stones? I wanna grow like you, Cowboy. ;)

I do have an attached screen solution, which allows me to lift the entire lid/plant/scrog off the tote if I need. I also can change the water with a pump without disturbing anything, if I don't need to clean the totes. If I do need to clean the totes, I can just lift the swap in new ones under the lids. It sure looks like I overdid it on reservoir size. But at least the tote provides a big, stable scrog screen support. I hope it gives you some ideas--I love overthinking things, and I came up with a fairly simple design.

By the way, I am wearing those same pajama bottoms right now. Brother!!!:high-five:

Thanks for joining in OG, and compliments on your fantastic grow. Very inspiring. Continued happy growing to you. :green_heart:

your plants is amazing:goodjob:congrats:bravo:

Grow Build Update:

Well, alrighty then! :welcome:

Hi Friends,

I've been a busy little stoner, and eager to post photos of my exploits, but for some reason I've been suddenly unable to upload photos from a browser, either on my phone or PC. But the mods suggested a workaround and, tah-dah!, photos from the 420 Magazine app on my phone. Any port in a storm.

I want to share my DWC scrog ideas and build and get your comments. I am a klutz :tokin:, yet love designing and tweaking :hmmmm:, so my strategy (and fun) is to take the time in advance to design and build something that will be convenient to use.

So, I've decided to try a setup where everything is attached to the tote lid--plant, scrog, water level gauge, and airstone access--so that when the time comes to change nutes, I can pump out the old nutes, put the lid on a clean tote, pump in new nutes, and be done.

Also, the totes makes it hard to the traditional side-mounted clear-hose level gauge, so I decided on a float with a rod that sticks up above the tote.

Also, my scrog strategy involves LST, and a hydro pail doesn't provide easy anchoring for training wires, so I zip-tied 1/2" wire mesh to each basket--keeping with the idea of working more on the setup to make it easier to use.

So here we go. The totes are 17 gallon Sterilite from MalWart, and the baskets are 6", with wide rims to fit on a 5gal pail. I chose those because the rim would provide stability and mounting options. I cut slots in the tote lids, to allow 2 baskets per tote for small plants, on per tote as they grow.

420-magazine-mobile1979776934.jpg

The floating water gauges are 3/8" dowel from a home improvement store, sharpened on one end, sprayed silver, and stuck into a piece of foam from Wally World's craft aisle. The mount and guide are the Hydrofarm 1/2" straight tubing fittings, inserted in their rubber mounting grommets, both available from the big A. the are sized so the top of the dowel is flush with the fitting when the tote is empty, and then I marked a thick line on the dowel at the water level even with the basket bottoms, and then smaller lines an inch apart in both directions. Presto, gauge! :)

I also drilled two holes at each corner of the lids, and inserted a wire in each one. These wires will anchor the legs of the scrogs I'm making out of 1/2" PVC pipe and fittings.

I also cut holes in the lids for airstone tubing and a garden hose for tote filling and emptying. I bought a Rubbermaid 44 gallon Brute garbage can from a home improvement chain, and I use that to mix up nutes, and then I use a fluid transfer pump to put the nutes into the totes, or empty the totes.

Here's the result. :)

420-magazine-mobile1307768004.jpg

If you'll look closely, you can see that I've set the water level at 1" above the bottom of the baskets.

Grow Report:

I've only had the plants in for 6 hours, and I'd swear they are already growing and changing. I had the baskets sitting in bowls of nutes longer than I wanted while I finished the totes, and I think the plants had outgrown them--they have roots coming out of the baskets, and a few lower leaves were marked. I'm excited to see how they respond to plentiful, oxygenated nutrition. I nipped the 5th node off each plant with my fingernails, and I may have nipped too much, and damaged the secondary growth on some of the 4th node. Lesson learned, and I'm hoping it won't cause a problem. On a positive note, it seems like topping so early, and when the 5th node leaves were only 1/4 to 1/2" does not seem to have slowed down the plants much at all. :thumb:

Now I want to figure out how to fit an oscillating fan in this tight set-up. I'm hoping I can hang one upside down from the ceiling.

I'm a total newb here, trying to do it right, follow the basic rules, and not screw up too badly. I appreciate your comments, suggestions, and encouragement, chuckle. :) Happy growing! :Namaste:

Hi Friends,

Me and the ladies have been busy. I'll start with the grow porn, then grow technique--hard water, ventilation, tote size. I hope you enjoy the ride.

Grow Update
It took me longer to get my totes ready than I'd planned, and I finally got my net pots into the totes on the night of Friday, 160520. WOW! :jawdropper:
It was like going into warp drive! they'd been short, compact, and conical, and immediately the tops began to widen and rise, though still very dense. My topping was indeed fumble-fingered, and I did nip off some secondaries along with the main. Live and learn--I have some nifty little scissors for the second and final topping. But first I'll do some LST

Okay enough foreplay, now for the photos.

As always, clockwise from the ULHC, the totes contain two each of Black Jack, Master Kush, Pure Power Plant, and Wonder Woman.

All are thriving, with the PPP improving to a tie for first with the MK, and WW just behind them, with BJ continuing to be smaller and unique. You can see that it has big, outstretched fan leaves, and a smaller core.

Grow Room

Well Water:

My big challenge this week is my well water. It is 250PPM, and I'd hoped that with the GH hardwater Flora Micro, my pH would be manageable. No such luck. It was somewhere between 7 and 8 with nutes, and was still around 7 after using 6oz s of my 8oz bottle of GH ph Down in 48 gallons. I've already spent more money than I'd planned (there's a shocker), and the girls are looking okay now, but I've told myself I'm not going to make any obvious mistakes on my first hydro grow, so I'm biting the bullet and going for a RO filter.

I decided on the Hydrogardener Pro, because the manufacturer claims it is designed to work with wells, and it puts back in the Cal-Mag, making supplements unnecessary. I hope I'm right--comments appreciated.

It comes with a hose adapter, and I'm planning on putting it outside--maybe in a tote--with a 44 Gal Brute garbage can with a float for a tank.

Ventilation:

I finally got my 6" duct fan with speed control rigged up and exhausting out the window. I used insulated ducting from the home store, and I like it--I even ran the wrap over the duct fan, to cut some noise.

Tote Size:

I'm wondering if I have overkilled my reservoir size--4 of 17 gallon totes in a 4.4' tent. Running an inch above the basket bottom for initial rooting, each tote took 12 gallons. I'm wondering if I'm wasting nutes, and considered going to 4 of 5 gallon buckets for the next 4x4'. For now I'm leaning towards the totes, because I can run the water level low if I want to save nutes, and the big totes make it easy to mount my scrog frames on the lids. I'm also thinking that a big reservoir is not a bad thing.

Thoughts, comments, concerns? :) :tokin:

I hope you enjoyed. Wishing you peace and gratitude :Namaste:

Well, I can tell you that a small res is a PITA so my guess is bigger is better. I'm sure there is a point of diminishing return though. I wouldn't even venture to guess what that point is though.

Thanks Jayne, I appreciate your experiences and insight. Yeah, I think I'll stick with the big totes, and maybe experiment on smaller ones once I have a successful grow (fingers crossed). :)

Have a great day. :circle-of-love:

Hey HappyJ
Sorry I have not been by much but been super busy.Have a lotting on right now, but I did notice you mentioning that you have your water level 1 inch above the bottom of the baskets. I would think by now your root system has dropped below the basket and into the reservoir. If your roots are below the bottom of the basket, it is time to lower your water level and force the plant to send out more tap roots. It will actually make for a stronger healthier plant if you keep the water level about 1 inch below the basket once the 1st set of roots makes its way down into the reservoir.

Plants are looking good though I would be seriously thinking about at what point you intend to flip them into flower. Depending on the strain they can get pretty big once the flip. My MG was 18 inches tall and about 12 inches across when I flipped her on Mothers day, now she is around 30 inches tall and 36 inches across and no signs of slowing down. She has not even started setting pre flowers yet while my huckleberry is packed with buds. You do not want to take them 1/2 way through and have the outgrow your grow area. Personally I would flip them before they get a foot tall because when they finish stretching you will be lucky if you will be able to find your reservoirs let alone see them.
Are you using liquid PH down? I use the powder GH PH down comes in a 2.2 pound bag for like 6 or 8 bucks. I use like 1/4 teaspoon or less to lower my PH in my 5 gallon buckets. I bought this bag over a year ago and I PH all the water I use for both inside and outdoor grows and it is still way over 1/2 full. My Ph is normally around 6.9 or so unless I am adding Silica then it jumps to well over 9.0.

Think you will have no issues having a successful grow, your plants look great, your gardening skills seem just fine, though your garden may outgrow your garden space if your not careful.

Hey Older Grower,

Thanks for keeping an eye on me, and the feedback. I understand and appreciate how hard it is to make time for such things. :thumb:

I'm on the same page on reservoir level. I haven't replenished it yet, and the level is just dropping below basket bottoms. And point taken on careful flip timing to avoid over-filling the space.

After lots of research (for better or worse) I settled in the technique spelled out in "LBH's Famous ScrOG Tutorial". His method is very strict, and doesn't let the main shoots rise about the screen--which he sets at 4"--I'm planning closer to a foot. He tops the 5th leaf pair when they are 1/4"-1/2" long, then when the resulting 2 mains and 2 secondaries are about 4" long, lst them down to the ground in a "+" pattern, and top them again. Then use the screen to force the resulting mains to grow outward under the screen rather than about it, flip early, and continue limiting the mains to the screen during the flowering stretch. Sound good? His grows ended up in perfect planes of buds, like a hairbrush, right at the light's sweet distance.

Thanks for your confidence in my grow skills. I did have successful indoor soil grows, way back about 35 years ago when SHO fluorescent fixtures were the hot ticket. And I love gardening. So I don't want to screw up too bad.

My next concern is keeping my eye on root health. I've already put in one of those beneficial bacterial additives, and am monitoring temperatures. Now that I have my A/C and tent exhaust set up, my lights-on tent temp dropped from 81 to 77.

What size dense canopy are you getting from your 5 gal hydro bucket? I know my totes are overkill, but they will be a convenient scrog mount.

Thanks again for taking the time, brother. Best wishes for your grow, and everything else. :thanks:

Oh, could you please tell me the source of that GH pH Down powder? I looked all over for it and could not find it. I'll try to PM you, in case forum rules forbid sharing it. I'd really like to get some.
