I like the simplicity and efficiency of your setup, but I think I'm going to set mine up with straight hydroton in the buckets, continuous drip, and strong bubble action in the res.

I think continuously providing oxygenated nutes through a medium that drains well will give me good results, and just as important, the plants could easily be hand-watered in case of power outages, and they'll even survive a pump failure for a few days even if I'm not home.

Hybrid Hempy. It's gonna be a fun DIY .

i was plaining on doing the same thing on my next grow. IMO that would make the best setup. what i wanted to do is build a frame under my 4x4 tray and hook up a res under it that have it pumping back into the plants fill with all hydrton. seems like its as good as it gets. i also wanted to try coco and hydrton sometime with out the constant pump.

SS you just gave me a great idea!
I already have everything I need to make it happen so i basically just need to get up and do it.

The dead water with roots hanging in it would be a problem if there was a power outage.
Since the air pumps are under 10 watts they could easily be powered with a 12 volt battery and inverter in the case of an outage.
However since the power consumption is so little they could be plugged into the battery/inverter 24/7 and I can use a solar charge panel to keep the battery charged. I already have a 90 watt solar charger!
You just woke up the hamster in my head! time to get to work!

The more you can use renewable solar technology to power your grow, the "greener" it truly becomes! Hope you can start a thread on your design when complete.

SS, Bummer dude My last grow I had 8 out of 10 males ! Just reg AK48 seeds , still pisses you off after all the work to just have to chop em and toss em !! This time 2 fem clones and 5 fem'd seeds . Hope I have better luck with my fem'd seeds !!

8/10 would piss me off too.

You know, I really do think the great majority of the time fem seeds work out fine.

You're gonna hear all the negative experiences, of course, so that colors things when trying to research the issue.

If it was a big enough problem, we'd be hearing a lot more bitching.

You're gonna hear all the negative experiences, of course, so that colors things when trying to research the issue.

Bummer on dem seeds. It got me thinking (danger!), fem seeds that turn male, my freebie N Light Auto thats 7wks/20" , LST'd and growing.....You don't suppose them seed sorters are high do you?

Both Vicky and Shrub are doing well.

I just wasn't happy with how the self-watering pots were working with the perlite, so I decided to transplant Vicky into a regular 2-gallon planter's pot. I thought about transplanting into a hempy bucket, but I want to keep using the bubbles, so these pots with regular bottom holes and some deep saucers give me that option.

If Shrub's a girl, I'll transplant her too.

They're supposed to fire regardless and show at 2-3 weeks. How big are your plants at 7 wks veg? If you have space limitations, you might want to flip it now because it could double its height in bloom.

I transplanted Shrub into a regular Hempy bucket and layered another Tbsp of OC+ below the rootball but above the hole.

How ironic. Out of the five "fem" LR2 seeds, two didn't sprout and the three that did were males, while my two reg seeds both turn out female.

I did select the two reg for this grow in accordance with this thread:

Can you tell which seed is male or female?

very interesting, but need to do this on a much larger scale and see what percentages I get.

yep, makin' my own fem seeds is on my bucket list

this experience hasn't really soured me on fem seeds from breeders, however. I was just commenting on the irony in this particular grow, but I like to look at things globally, not just react to my own experiences, which are limited to just, ummmmmmmmmm, me,

If this selection of female seeds by the "volcano" method pans out to any significant degree, I'm just going to go with that, but again, need to do a much larger scale grow to get valid data.

I have the perfect pile 'o seeds to do it with

I want to start about 50 seeds selecting them according to that thread, and do a soil comparison grow at the same time. Try to kill a couple birds with one stone.
