As the plant is growing they feed her via of the sun or light, depending on location. When the girl no longer needs them she will stop nurturing them and they will fad away.

As the plant is growing they feed her via of the sun or light, depending on location. When the girl no longer needs them she will stop nurturing them and they will fad away.

As "garybo" is bringing up, the photosynthesis that is happening in the leaves is what will make the sugars/sucrose that the plant will use to grow more leaves, stems, roots and eventually flowers. All the nutrients in the soil or water will not do much good without the leaves to capture the energy from the sun or the lights.

And a healthy plant with healthy leaves will be able to fight off insects, mildews and other problems a lot easier.
