Timmy Haha's First DWC C4 Auto Grow Journal - 2016

I should say I would definitely fix the ph issue before you try and top. Your plant needs to be strong and healthy so the "stunt" is minimal or non existent.

Welcome along for the ride, AF! Will be awesome to hear your feedback. And I love the picture of your plant. Beautiful, especially for a first grow!

I agree about addressing my pH issue before topping (if I do it). I'll see what the pH reading is when I get home tonight. If it's a big jump again from yesterday, then I'll know it's not the nutrients or something in my water, since it was perfect when I made the switch.

I have a bucket of water that's been sitting for 24 hours, so I can pH adjust that and then dunk my net pot into it to resoak the growing medium. Maybe that will leech out more of the pH in the rocks.

I agree with this completely..... I would top after the 4th node grows a little.. I have some new pics in my journal of topped vs un topped but I say top it  and train the crap out of it. :bong:

Lookin good so far :thumb:

Day 16 Update

Hey there peeps! Things seem to be going well, fingers crossed. My pH levels seem to be lessening in their extremes, which is good. Went from 5.4 yesterday to 6.1 today, which is less than the 1+ point swing I was seeing before. I really do think it's the grow stones causing the increase because my water level is lowering as the roots grow and, thus, fewer stones are now directly in the solution.

Speaking of, here's a pictures of the roots. I can't believe how much they grew in one day, and more are beginning to poke out of the net pot!

Day_16_008.JPG

Along with the root growth, there's been some top growth too!

Day_16_0011.JPG

And I can see more of the branches poking out from the lower nodes:

Day_16_0021.JPG

Does anyone notice anything interesting in the picture above? Notice how on the second node the leaves aren't opposite each other? Has anyone ever seen a node go crooked like that? I wonder if it's a good sign or a bad sign...We'll see!

Latest readings: pH 5.8, water temp 73.5 (still too high, I know. I'm freezing water bottles as we speak to drop in there), ambient temp 79.8, RH 60%.

I expect my new LED light any day now! Do you think I'll notice a difference in growth rate once I switch from the 125W 6500K CFL to a 600W full spectrum LED? I sure hope so!

As well as learning to practice patience while waiting for my little girl to grow, I'm really enjoying reading all the other grow journals on here. I think I'm addicted to bud porn. haha Thanks to everyone for posting their experiences and especially thank you to everyone who's decided to follow my humble journal and offer your advice! I truly appreciate it!

:thanks:

Happy toking and good night!

Dude I wouldn't be too worried about 73 for your res. As long as it's not going to the warm side you shouldn't have issues. Once mine had dropped below 25C (77F) I had no problems with slime, PH etc (my experience anyway)

You should smash this, your studying up and fixing shit when it goes south. Keen to see the results.

Happy growing!

Looking great so far :goodjob:

I think auto's seem to do some weird stuff....mine have showed some some two leaf leaves, 6 leaf....but they seem fine. Could be an auto thing. One thing I learned tonight is if you are going to do any lst you should start now...The stems get thick really quick and I was tying down the third or forth node and accidently split the the branch from the main stem....I did a quick repair job on the joint and I am hoping for the best...today was day 23 for my girl....don't wait to long......just my 2 cent

:bong: :peace:

Looking very nice,, for sure,, the off center branches, is totally normal,, no worries there,, clones do that a lot I have noticed

Roots lookin nice and Lilly white,, great job,, cheers fer now

Actually, I think I must of hit that branch on the light while taking it out to get to the plant behind it. I found some burnt tips on top of the cola this morning where I must have hit the light with it while taking it out.....note to self and others...watch out for head clearance!!!

newbie patch job...lol
20170104_224414.jpg

I am hoping that since the branch didn't break completely off...only about half way through... that my newbie patch job works out ok. I looked in on her this afternoon and she looks just fine...minus a burnt tip or two :thumb:

The repair should and will be fine,, these plants so tuff, you know, In some places, Ole time mj farmers actually split the stalks, all the way to the ground, and let em grow from there

That patch will swell up twice as big now, some say that allows delivery of even more energy to that branch,, good job there

Reps friend,, cheers

Thanks for the confidence booster Nivek :high-five:

Should I just leave it there for the rest of the grow or take it off at some point? :bong:

Any new pics or updates to report Timmy.....I'm letting you be my guinea pig with the dwc :cheesygrinsmiley:
I wanted to go that route but my number one goal was to keep it as simple as possible and it doesn't get much easier than soil.....good soil, good ph, lots of tlc and usually minimal nutes will get you some decent smoke for a first grow.....I wasn't as brave as you :adore:

Thanks, bc! I was looking at some close up shots I took of my stem and I think I'm going to wait until the fourth node is out before I try doing any lst. One prob I have is the plant is still too short to be able to attach any restraints from the plant to the side of the bucket top and I can't really anchor anything into the grow stones.

Day_16_0021.JPG

Once it grows another node or two, it'll be easier to use my pipe cleaners and some electrical tape to attach to the bucket top. So I'll just be settling for very light lst. My goal is to just successfully grow a plant and then start doing the training. My next seed is an Auto Super Lemon Haze, which is supposedly a fast grower and big, so that will be the one I'll train.

:volcano-smiley:

You'll be able to remove that within a week. Last grow I snapped 3 stems. You'll end up with a fat knuckle in that spot. Some growers do it on purpose it's called super cropping. I always wrapped tape around the broken area.
Things are looking good. Keep up the great work.

Glad to be your guinea pig, bc! Yea, I have some new pics tonight. I finally figured out I can zoom in on my iphone camera and get some better close-ups. Haha.... No one ever said I was good with gadgets!

Great repair job on your girl! I can't remember - is it an auto or photo?

I'll post pics in a separate message so they don't get repeated if anyone quotes this....

DAY 17 UPDATE

Got some better close up pics. I have a question on the first one....does it look like the first fan leaves are kind of wrinkling and maybe the tips are slightly curling? Is that bad? I'm wondering if maybe I have my light too close or something?

Day_17_pics_004.JPG

Here are a few of the roots. They're growing fast and furious!

And a couple of close-ups:

My pH is starting to come under control! It only went up to 6.5 today, which was perfect! I added a few drops of pH down and brought it down to 5.8.

Tunkers - thanks for the words of wisdom re: water temp (see his post above). I'm just so worried about root rot. I know I could let it go higher, but I'm still trying to keep it close to 70F if I can. So after keeping a frozen coke bottle full of water in the bucket today, temp was exactly at 70F when I did my first reading tonight.

I think that's about it! My LED light didn't come yet (sad face), so nothing to report there.

Now I'm off to catch up on all my subscribed threads!

:Namaste:

I see what ya mean now Timmy...... by that time in my grow she already had side nodes as tall as the top and were pushing through the huge fan leaves at the top...I topped and trimmed and the sides exploded in growth...and If you look at the pic , the center stalk where I topped actually grew back in a matter of days and now almost looks as if I didn't top....I must not have cut low enough at the node, maybe left a little veg and it grew back......either way...BONUS TOP :high-five:

I chose Pineapple kush as one of my first plants because it can finish in as little as 56 days from seed, which means probably 70 or so for me and fits my cab height req.

Keep up the good work....:allgood:

Did my first LST today! If you've been reading along, you know I was playing with the idea and almost decided against it (or at least delaying it). But the fourth node grew out so fast overnight and the stem was looking good, I did a careful test bend to see how flexible it was. When it seemed to bend easily and in the direction I wanted, I quickly grabbed a pipe cleaner and did it for real.

Here's how Ruth is looking now:

I also have a question regarding PPM. At this stage of veg (Day 19), what should the PPM of the hydro solution be? The TDS meter I ordered from eBay arrived today and so now I know my PPM is 339. I have no idea if that's good or bad yet...

Anyone have feedback?

THANKS so much for reading, folks! If you're stuck inside because of snow right now, have an extra toke for me and I'll return the favor!
:volcano-smiley:

Haha

Plants are looking great man. Your close ups are real nice. I'm excited for you with the size of those fans. I'm going to try some lst on at least one of my girls too. If it goes smooth, I'll do both, so let us know any issues you run into. Everything looks sick tho... nice work!
