I suppose pests are all part of the fun when you head into the outdoors. Had never really thought of it that way, being an indoor grower. Having to keep up with sprays etc must add a whole new aspect to growing.
Do you find the sprays have any effect on bud taste at the end?
I don't think I would call the pests part of the fun But they are definitely a part of growing outdoors ! I've never noticed any effects on bud taste, but then again I try not to spray during the middle or end of flowering. Not only because it's a bad idea to spray the harsh chemicals on the developed buds, it is pretty much a bad idea to spray anything on the developed buds. Once they get to a certain point in flowering when they start to bulken up and become dense you don't really want to spray anything on the buds at that point because it is just asking for Budrot. I would rather smoke a few spidermites then smoke some bud that was infested w/spidermites and then sprayed down with a pesticide late in flowering. Then you will be smoking dead spidermites, chemicals, & possibly moldy bud.
I alternate between two sprays every week, BT Thuricide which is for caterpillars, & Azatrol which is an OMRI certified broad-range insecticide. I will continue alternating sprays until the middle of flowering, or until the buds start to dense up. By that time the plants are almost finished and the pest population is so diminished that they should be able to finish up without any problems, and if i do spot any pests then my last two lines of defense are to spray my entire grow room down except the plants, and if that doesn't work then I can remove the plants for a day and use an aerosol fogger which will eliminate any & all pests. I've never had to use my last two lines of defense because using preventive measures every week during the grow should control the pest population, those are just simply last resorts that I have on hand in case an infestation does occur!
I am wondering the same thing. Some of the chemicals for pest control are rather nasty. It would seem you need to be rather selective about what you would use.
Yes some pest control chemicals are very unhealthy ! The hot shot no pest strips I use are great, they release a chemical in the air that kills a broad range of insects but it is unhealthy for humans ! It states on the back to not use in an area that will be occupied by humans for more then 4 hours a day. Therefore I only use it during the off season because I feel unsafe in the growroom with it in there ! Most forms of pest control are unhealthy, that is why it is important to START with a clean & sanitized grow area and use a broad range insecticide weekly to prevent an infestation ! I highly recommend using Azatrol
