Hello world!

If anyone is reading this, first let me say thank you. I'm not much of a joiner (probably like most of you) but I've been lurking in the shadows for a few weeks and have been so inspired by the wealth of knowledge and cooperation in this community that I felt I had to be a part of it. Before I jump into the specifics and pictures of the grow, please allow me to introduce myself.

This is not my first grow, but it is my first grow in a very long time. Like fifteen years. A lot has changed since I used to grow in my first apartment after college guided by an outdated Rosenthal guide, and trying to put off getting a full time job for as long as possible (you can do it for years). So I'm excited to see what's out there these days and rekindle the love affair with my plants and GC. (If you get confused by any of the shorthand or stupid and/or annoying initialisms you read, there is a glossary in my signature.)

This grow came about for a few reasons but the first and most important is that I recently relocated back to my, now recreational, home state after a decade in NY. Nosey landlords and cramped apartments don't make great grow spots, and I've been lucky to afford the boutique delivery services, so I never considered growing again. Now I'm working on a new business venture not far from where I grew up, and the best part??? I get to grow weed with my dad! Hopefully we can get him set up here in the near future so he can introduce himself, but I'd like to note that this isn't his first grow either. He's done some outdoor and two other indoor grows, but as will become evident with further reading, it's not something he's ever taken very seriously, but has done successfully on a small scale. That being said, both he and I have a firm grasp of all the basic principles, a loose grasp but little practical knowledge of the more complicated concepts or reactive therapies, and almost certainly we know exactly enough to get ourselves into trouble in a myriad of ways. So buckle up and watch us hopefully not embarrass ourselves too much.

We are starting this grow at roughly week three of veg for the from seed plants and week three of flowering plants my dad had vegged for three months under practically non existent lighting. See details for those plants in the Strains section below and photos following all these dumb words.

Grow Space - We converted an unused basement room in my parents' house (neglected pottery studio for mom) into our grow room. The room itself is about 70 sq feet, much more than we need, so we built out a flower space and will use a cabinet we cut the top off of for veg. The flower room is 3.5' x 5 and the table is roughly 3 x 4. The room has a sink which is great and theres a good space under the veg table for future cloning. There is a table for trimming etc. and enough room left over for hanging or hopscotch or whatever. Also theres a portrait of Dick Nixon. This is my dad's and meant to be ironic so please don't judge ;) . This time of year it's running about 72 - 84 degrees with 40 - 55% RH (running a small humidifier).

Strains - We are growing seven strains between the two spaces. Currently flowering are 5 x Lavender and 4 x Liberty Haze all from clones that originated from Barney's. These are plants my dad had already been growing in an other area in the house. He was using a mix of twisty bulbs and shop LEDs and generally not giving a shit about them. They were vegged for three months and while very healthy, were super stringy and small. You can see those and his cat, Yuki, in the pictures below. Anyway new lights new life, as nobody said ever!

Currently vegging are fifteen photoperiod plants mostly from seeds that a grower friend had on hand (except the CBD). These are as follows: 5 Pineapple Fields from Dynasty Genetics, 4 Trinity x Pure Kush from unknown (forgot to ask my friend), 3 Harlequin x Miss Universe from Dynasty Genetics, 1 I95 x Sour Diesel from Mass Blooms, and 2 Cherry Bullet Delight CBD plant Highly Evolved Medical Plants. Only the CBD and the Trin x PK are feminized so we'll be playing the waiting game on the sexing game.. wait that did't sound good.

Lights - For veg we are using a 400w T5 hood and 2 50w COBs for supplemental. In the flower room we have 1 Mars Hydro 300, 1 Mars Hydro Pro II Epistar 400, 1 Unmentionable Brand 600, and 2 Unmentionable Brand 300s. I've only ever used HID but my pops didn't want to spend a fortune on setup and didn't want to deal with the heat. We are in a cold climate and in the winter their wood fueled boiler already keeps the basement hot. Next step for these lights will be a COB conversion which I'm looking forward to sharing.

Medium - Soil: PROMIX BX consisting of 75%-85% Sphagnum, ?% Perlite, ?% Vermiculite, ?% Limestone, + Mycorrhizae. In a combination of earth boxes, planter pots, and bags. The flowering plants that were started by Dear Old Dad or DOD as we will refer to him form now on, were started in MG soil I believe. They were very root bound and the soil was like cement when I transplanted, them so those plants are probably only half Promix in reality.

Pests - Funny you should bring pests up because... drumroll please... We have fungus gnats!!!! Or I'm pretty sure we do. You can see a pic of one below. They must have some with the clones but thankfully DOD has already used bacillus thuringiensis so it's a small problem that should be corrected without too much trouble. Right now the plants are happy. If anyone disagrees with the FG diagnosis, please let me know, as I am usually wrong about everything.

Ferts - The vegging plants got their first fert last week in the form of top dressed premixed organic fert. The ingredients are as follows: Bat Guano, Neem Seed Meal, Fish Meal, Crab Meal, Shrimp Meal, Kelp Meal, and Langbeinite. Teas will be introduced in the not too distant future. For flowering we will be using good old fashioned Tiger Bloom, and probably some other stuff that I'll update as we progress down the road.

I think that covers the pertinent details but let me know if I left anything out (assuming as least one person reads this and hasn't jumped off a roof out of boredom). Without further ado, let me introduce you to the girls (and boys).

Here are the little babies at two weeks. It's been so long since I've grown I made the classic rookie move of giving the second watering about two days early which the Pineapple Fields plants felt particularly sad about. You can't really see the sadness in this pic but they got droopy and showed the nitrogen pain.

And the same little babies at three weeks feeling a little better about life but showing some slowed growth. At this point they've only gotten T5 light and we just added the two COBs to supplement.

These are the stringers I talked about earlier and how they looked on flower day one under the blurple. This picture is objectively terrible I know, but it gives a good ideas of the overall shape of these plants when we put them in flower.

This is Yuki, Queen of the Netherworld and Devourer of Rodent Souls

And here is that same room now at 21 days flower. Sorry about the blurple. I'll shoot better pics next time.

Lavender 1 at 14 days flower.

Lavender 3 with Dick at 14 days flower.

Liberty Haze 1 at 14 days flower.

Lavender bud at 21 days flower.

I believe this is an FG? I've never seen one in person so make my day and tell me I'm wrong.

I think that's all for now. Here's to hoping anyone reads the thing you spent a couple hours writing. Cheers! - LEDSS

Girls are lookong Good, and welcome to you and your father. You have come to the best place for everything 420. I'm a noob myself but have gained knowledge at an exponential rate, speaking to all the pros on here. I look forward to watching your journey. Happy Sabbath Pal. :)

Thanks for the welcome, Teddy! I appreciate the love and will check out what you have going on shortly.

Hi and welcome :)
That is awesome to be growing with your dad :thumb:
:cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer::cheer:
We will be here helping out in anyway we can. Hope dad will join too.

I noticed the reflective silver (aluminium foil?) If you use that type, it is always better to expose the non shiny side, since it can cause hot spots =burns on plants.

So, noone told you... I have to..
Yes it looks like one..

Thanks for the confirmation, AB. And the warm welcome! If you (or anyone else) has suggestions for alternative treatments to thuringiensis I’d love to hear them.

Edit- I checked out the links in your signature. Good stuff!! Now to look into other organic measures like tobacco juice. And this is why it’s worth starting a journal. Thank you.

The reflective material is Mylar, I just did a super bad job hanging it over a concrete wall and wrinkled the crap out of it. :(

Hi
Just clarify thuringiensis for me. The one I know lives in soil and if exposed to sun, it dies within a few days, and in humans it remains in stomach and "dilutes" in a few days.
Here I am trying to quit smoking lol.
What benefits does tobacco jimuice have to plants except killing bugs?

Yeah, my understanding of BT is that it’s killed off pretty quickly and safe for mammals because they can’t live in the acidic gut environment. I’ve never used it but my pops likes to use it on his soil sporadically, whether or not there are any pests.

I read into the tobacco juice method more and it’s recommended only for foliar feeding from what I can’t tell so I’m not sure how effective that would be on the larvae?

Thing is, anything you give the plants in the soil has to be food graded.
Tobacco juice as a bug spray is ok I guess, but I believe the plant will absorb the taste/smell.
Would you want the plant to smell like an Ash tray?
Will you use it before planting or during growing?
I used a bug spray that I found on the net.
Muerte caliente.
I replaced the veg oil with eucalyptus oil(orange is good too).

"Muerte Caliente" I love it! That looks interesting. Did you use this for gnats? I see it's commonly used for aphids and spider mites.

I don't think we'll use the tobacco juice method as I think the BT would be more effective. And no I definitely don't want my plants to smell like an ashtray!

I had it for gnats too.. Allthough gnats has other methods..
.Fungus gnats: a slice of potato peel in soil leave it there for a few days (4-5) throw it away and repeat until you can't see any more. also Patchouli, spearmint, orange, citronella, tagetes, cedarwood, peppermint, eucalyptus, rose geranium
Or
A shot glass by each stem with vinegar and a few drops of dish soap
Aphids: banana peel, Cedar wood, hyssop, peppermint, spearmint, orange
Spider-mites: eucalyptus oil ( I made a lot of it !! Since it helps to send mosquitoes away too) cinnamon or rosemary oil does the trick too.
All from first post in my journal

Amazing. It looks like I have a lot to read about. It's knowledgable members like you that make this place special, so thank you for that as well. Am I allowed to give rep points? And if so how do I do that?

Unfortunately they took away rep points some time ago
Just press my signature last link that was my grow journal.

I’ll be digesting your links this week. The home remedies thread is especially interesting. Thanks for your work and I’ll be looking forward to when I can nominate one of you incredibly helpful and experienced folk that keep this site active and up to date.

Quick update and some pics from over the weekend. The bud shots are current at about 21 days in 12/12 light. It was time to water almost everyone yesterday so it was a great opportunity to practice the watering technique outlined by Emilya in her article HERE. Root training is an intuitive and interesting way to think about indoor soil gardening.

I top dressed all plants with thuringiensis (bacteria hostile to fungus gnat larvae) to nip this FG problem in the bud so to speak. We're only seeing a handful of adults right now so hopefully we caught this before it turns into a real problem.

Along with the bud porn there are a couple picture of whole Lavender plants at 21 days in flower. It's incredible how these are filling out after being so stringy when they went into 12/12. We're going to be staking the crap out of these when the buds put on weight over the next couple weeks. There is also a blurple shot of the three Liberty Haze in their Earth Box and a blurple shot of the whole room as it looks now.

Finally there is a shot of the veg table and of an unhappy Pineapple Fields plant. I've been doing some side by side comparison of LST techniques and pony tailing a couple plants everyday for about six hours. Well, being a busy stoner, I forgot to take them off until the next day so they were tied up for about 24 hours, leaving the top leaves looking pretty sad and dried out. That was yesterday though and today it's looking pretty fit. Another reminder of how hearty this plant is. That's all for today. Thanks for reading and hope you enjoy the pictures.

Father and son grow A+.
You guys are doing a great job :bravo:
@Emilya has some awesome tutorials, she is full of knowledge. I just called here here. See her signature when she posts.. You need nothing else :)

Hi everyone! Thanks for the call AB! Looks like father and son have it going on!
Hi Em  My pleasure :)
