My First Grow!

Hey Smokey - sounds like things are progressing very nicely. Did I see your PH at 5.0% though? I don't do DWC, so maybe it's different - but that seems pretty low to me. I try to shoot for 5.5 - 5.8 in hydro as my ideal zone, letting it get slightly above or below that for short periods only. Just don't want PH to bite you on the bottom - it can create serious issues if it's not quite right. Getting closer and closer to bud porn here!

pH is around 5.0 *to start*. I have not yet invested in a RO system, so I am using tap water, which locally has a pH of about 8-9. Technaflora nutrients are designed to be ran from pH 5.3 to 6.7, which is a very broad range compared to AN. This works very well for me, as my pH is tested with an old-school liquid test kit, rather than an electronic meter.

When I change my reservoir in my ebb and flow, I generally start the week out at a very low pH, typically around 5.0 - 5.4. In the first 24 hours after the change, the pH climbs back up to around 7-8. I then adjust back down to pH 5.0 and start the weeks watering cycles. Over the course of the week, the pH of the solution rises naturally as the plants feed off the nutrients and use water. The spent solution usually has a final pH of between 6.7 and 7.5. I check pH periodically throughout the week to make sure nothing crazy is going on, but I only have to pH down the water once at reservoir change. It is a beautiful thing. This nutrient system works well with the local tap, and the broad nutrient uptake range allows for a modest margin of error. I wasn't totally sold on Technaflora, but I think I may give them a fair chance. It seems that the majority of growers are using Advanced Nutrients, and quite a few of said majority enjoy hatin' on those of us who aren't.

Yes sir, you heard correctly!! 12/12 and flowering mix. I am probably going to finish the week with the MH on 12/12, and then switch over to the HPS bulb at next reservoir change. Or I may say screw it and do it tomorrow.... Who really knows what the new day will bring?

Bud porn is indeed on the way! Now comes the hard part -- The waiting. Xlr8, I was reading on your thread that someone suggested that the most vigorous (fast growing) plants may be males. I wonder if that is indeed the case. If it is, I have 3-4. Well, 2 for sure, 1 I am fairly sure on, and 1-2 more that I am on the fence about.

I will be germing the Humboldt soon.

Never had this one before. I looks pretty in the picture, no? Here is what the seed bank had to say;

"Very floral, undertones, sweet smell associated with a peppery haze high, very strong and penetrating, uplifting & motivational high, mind bending. Great for closet & homebox garden."

I am stoked about this, big time. It is a feminized seed, so there should be no worries. Exciting times abound.

After reading the description, I made a note to myself for my next purchase. Love it. I've never ever had bad "humboldt weed". So a "humboldt" strain with a look and description like that? I'm all over it! Sounds awesome, and I can't wait to see you grow it!

Advance Nutrients work great I'm sure - I have limited, but some experience with them. To me, there are a lot of good nutrient programs out there - I think it's often the grower that makes the big difference. Understanding, identifying and addressing issues early and decisively to keep the plant happy - that's what makes the difference from what I can see/tell. I'm still learning in this and many other regards!!

I chose Dutch Master because they are simple, relatively affordable, and I've seen many here with good to great results. I also like how "liquid" it is in the sense of not a lot of particulate matter, etc. Should help keep things from gunking up...

A lot of people on this site have grown amazing bud with the techna flora line - it'll work terrifically without a doubt!

As far as males - they tend to grow faster than females, but this is not an absolute. I've seen aggressive growing females that I thought were going to be males, so it's not an absolute. But, every male I've seen has been an aggressive grower, if that makes sense. Males sometimes look a bit scragglier and less symmetrically structured. I am thinking there is a really teeny male part growing on my fast grower, too.

So its been a few days and things are going well. Changed over to the HPS bulb this morning and pulled a male this afternoon. I believe the 4 plants remaining in the tray are girls, which is good. Doing a reservoir change tonight. These plants have gotten quite thirsty. Three 13-minute waterings this week have drawn much water from my reservoir. Pics up later tonight, after work.

Sounds good! They'll be budding up and you'll be smokin' soon my friend!

So I've been bad. I just wanted to let you all know that this grow is indeed still alive, and doing very well. My apologies for the break, but you know how life can get sometimes.... Full-fledged update coming soon.

Cool - glad to know you're okay Smokey. I have to admit, I genuinely worry when people are absent for a long period of time (though we all get busy and life demands our time!) Can't wait for the update! :)

P.S. I liked the description you posted on the Humboldt strain so much, that I've added some to my seed collection for a future grow. Sure sounds yummy. :yummy:

Greetings everyone!!! It has been some time since my last real update, and I am very sorry for that!!! Life has gotten rather busy over the past month and a half, but I now have a little more spare time. So, now for the good stuff......

As you can see, my lovely plants are alive and well. There have been 3 new additions to my reservoir setup.

This stuff is amazing. I am not usually a fanboy for new products, but this stuff is the real-deal. For example:

S7305430.jpg

The white salt build up on the upper part of the cube was there before I began using the Drip Clean. In fact, it was the reason I decided to purchase this product. The bottom half of this cube (the clean half) is the result after using the product for over a month. You can clearly see the level the water rises to during the flood cycles. This product has blown me away.

I have also been trying out two new additives that were given to me the last time I visited the hydro shop.

S7305432.jpg

The Bushmaster is supposed to stop vertical growth to help produce a nice bushy plant. So from where I stand, it has done its job. The second product, SnowStorm Ultra, is supposed to help your plants get nice and frosty. I can't wait to see how well it does.

So here are some pictures that I snapped tonight after the lights turned off....

Here is my most vigorous grower

This one has incredibly hairy buds, which hopefully will turn into fat nugs by the end.....

And this is the one I am most excited about.... This is my largest cola on the front plant...

There we have an honest-to-goodness update folks!!! I am not sure how much longer I have until harvest, some insight from those more experienced would be fantastic. Getting things ready for the next grow... Got my Humboldt germinating right now, stocking up on nutrients.

Thank you all for sticking with my journal to this point.

Pretty plants :) McCrackin is right about harvest time, you should defiantly determine timing by trichomes. You can use a jewelers loop, microscope (hand held scopes are available) or a camera with a macro lens. If you want a more relaxed body stone wait until some of the trichomes start to turn amber then start your flush, if you want a headier up high then start your flush when about half of the trichomes have turned from clear to cloudy. That's what I do anyway.

Wow - looking good Smokey. Really frosting up! Nice to see all is still well, and I agree with McCrackin and others that you should be looking at your trichomes to guide you on harvest time. Radio Shack has a good scope for ~20$ or so. Just clip a sample, put it under the scope and make note of the trichomes as far as clear, milky, or amber. I like to harvest when about 50% milky/50% amber or so. Clear to milky will be a more energetic, psychedelic high while more amber will tend toward a narcotic effect - more stoned couch-lock type of high.

I have the radio shack scope, but I have started using an Eyeclops kids toy - works outstanding. I can look at my trichomes magnified on the 50" plasma. It's so freaking cool! :yahoo:

Anyway - looking great! :goodjob:

Thanks all!! I was hoping they would be ready sooner than 5-6 weeks, but I have come this far and am willing to wait. This is my first time ever witnessing live buds, so my excitement is definitely building. It is becoming increasingly clear to me why so many people on here advocate using seedbank seeds as opposed to bagseeds. These are 3 different plants that each have unique genetics and growing requirements. For instance, the largest plant will be ready to come down at least 2 weeks before the other two -- As of this morning, there were brown pistils on several of the buds. The buds on the other two plants have yet to really even start filling out. Perhaps the fast grower (Emily) is Indica heavy. Hopefully, by the time these three are finished up, I will have some Humboldt clones ready to go in for flowering.

I ordered feminized seeds, so should I take a test clone to flower just to be certain it will be female? I would hate to have my tent loaded with males again.

Will be adding a second tray next time around and SCROG, I think. Three plants is too much for this small of a tray, as these three are starting to fight for leaf and root space. A SCROG will help me make the most of the 400w light and space I am using, IMO. Does anyone have thoughts on this? Also, kicking around the idea of upgrading to 600 or 800 watts next grow...

:rollit:

Gah!!! So, one of my plants has gone hermie!!!!!! What should I do? Should I chop it down, or just let it finish?

Argh! I've been out of town this past week and am just getting caught up. I'm hoping you didn't chop your girl that hermied. You are getting very close to the end, and I would not advise chopping her at this stage, as you've made it this far. I think at this late stage you'd be better trying to just pick off any male flowers best you can as they probably won't do much harm at this stage anyway. You might end up with a few immature seeds, but I'm not thinking you should ditch her this late. Just my opinion - hope it's not too late. Normally I'd agree with Slowpuffer, but your so close to finish I'd stay the course. :goodluck:

P.S. No disrespect intended Slowpuffer, I'm only offering an alternative opinion based on the late stage of his grow (I'm guessing only 1-3 weeks left)...
