Need A Cheap Clone Box? Rapid Rooter Made Easy - Pics

I made a cloner out of a small plastic tub, some 1/2" tube, air stone, small pump and a dome I had. This project, without an air pump, cost me roughly twenty bucks.

Some things you may need to buy:
A plastic container with lid. Shallow is just fine. I used a 14X22X6" container. You want one that is dark. Clear or light colours may allow for mold to grow.
An air stone of your choice. If you're into hydroponics, you know that more is better when it comes to aerating your root system. 11 pm at Walmart will get you this piece of junk stone. Works. lol
Some 5/8" tubing
Air pump.

Some things you'll need:
A drill with what ever size bit you like. I used a vari-bit.
A pair of scissors or utility knife.
Less than 50 bucks, as represented by the bill folded in half.
A bowl. I chose a medium size for such a small job.
:lot-o-toke: Alllllll set! :thumb:

I did end up buying an air pump, but that's for other reasons. Needed air elsewhere in 2 thirty gallon nute tanks.

This is what I've been working with for a while, and it does a nice job. I just wanted my own version of a rapid rooter.

I laid out a set of holes to drill that isn't too crowded so I can easily put the clones in and take them out without damaging anything. I don't need a large cloner, just a fool-proof, maintenance-free dealy.
I drilled a set of holes 1/2" diameter. I then took some 5/8 drain line and cut some short pieces. 3" maybe?
In the picture, you'll see some yellow hose clamps on 6 tubes. That was plan (A). Changed my mind. Ont the short 5/8 tube, cut a slit, using your knife or scissors, almost to the top of the line. By leaving a little connected, you don't need to use a clamp to keep them from dropping through. You will need snip that last little bit when it comes time to transfer your clone to it's new home.

Set your box up wherever you like. My case, a veg tent. I hung a 150 watt led at about 18".
Set your air stone in the rez and drill a small hole to pass the air line through. Be sure to drill the hole above the water level. The water level should be roughly 1-1/2 to 2" from the level of the lid when it's on the rez.
Start filling the rez.
Fill to about 1-1/2 from the bottom of the lid.
Put the lid on and load the holes up!

Shown are also my RW cube clones in the new box. They need more time to root. .

I make no claim to inventing this thing. I just came up with my own twist of things I've seen people doing. Hope this helps someone out there.
If anyone has questions, drop me a line. Always happy to help

That's cool , I picked up an oxy clone for 40 bucks , it works OK. It has a little pump w a venturi . I still use rockwool ¾ of the time. Works just as well and I'm getting about a 98% success rate.

Well, AKGB, this is a learning experience for me. I started with 9 clones the other day. Let's see what happens. I did have to move the whole grow setup from one building to another in the freezing cold 2 days ago. Had to change water and added SuperThrive to the rez. Hope that wasn't a mistake. Leas are turning yellow and there's some kind of slime building up on the stems in the water. Time will tell......

hmm I wonder if the slime build up is due to the plastic the tote is made of. I know from experience that some plastics do leach into water especially if there is nutriants presant. maybe try getting a diferant kind of plastic tote preferably HDPE plastic. you may be able to get one at the hydro shop or from ebay/amazon. HDPE stands for high density poly etheline. I think that's how it's spelled. it does not react to chemicals which is why labs use it to store things in.

I had a refill of nutriants in one of the blue totes you can get at wallmart and it had about an inch of slime on the bottom and the solution was impossible to ph correctly due to chemicals leeching. caused me to loose 40 gallons of solution which can get expensive!

when it reacts it usually makes the ph dive hard which if your using live water will kill all the bennies you have which may be the sore of the slime. that's just my theory.

I also feel you on the mid grow move. so lame same exact thing happened to me my first grow but all rebounded the yeild was less than satisfying tho. that was 3 years ago and I am in my 1st real grow since I really don't look at the one 3 years ago as anything other than a learning experience.

what are you growing in? what kind of system is it? did you make it as well. has this been an ongoing issue or just since the move through the cold? how did you move the whole room? with water withought water in the system?

:thumb:I think I've solved the problem, but it's too late to upload pics tonight. More will follow...... :thumb:

Well, AKG, I'm with you 100% with the poor plastic theory. I hit HD, Walmart, and two Hydroponics stores the other day in search of some acceptable container. Bought a 3 gallon HDPE, black bucket and lid and thought about it a while. Then I got to BSing with Dave, the owner and before you know it, I bought a used 42 plug cloner for 45 bucks. You just can't beat that.
I had high hopes, but it just didn't pan out. After spending the time and money I did, I have learned to just spend the money the first time on the right stuff.
That said, I had to make a little clone box for the larger tray. I can also double as a mother/donor plant box.

I'm not quite done with it, but you get the idea.

So if you decide to make your own cloner setup, the best advice a can give is shop for a suitable container
FIRST and go from there! The method shown was sound. The materials, however, were not.

WELL, OFF TO TRY NEW THINGS!
Thanks for stopping by,
Andy. :Namaste:

Ill leave this up as a reminder that sometimes it's best to just bite the bullet. :thumb:

Try z7 by flying skull. Good stuff. Peroxide can cause slime. Good luck to you
