My cloning process -

Step 1 was to sterilize all equipment. I put on nitrile gloves and headed out to the moms. After two days of good watering, I took many cuttings and soaked them in distilled water with HydroZyme. The Rapid Rooter inserts were soaking in PH'd water (5.5). I cut below a leaf node, trimmed the tips of fan leaves except for the final growth set. Then dipped the cutting into cloning gel, and placed into the RR sponge. They are placed in staggered arrangement in the tray; setting under one fluorescent light with some screening paper above.

I had some extra cuttings leftover. I took the opportunity to try out a home-made "bubble cloner" I read about a couple weeks back. It consists of two $1 Sterilite containers, some dollar store cups, and an aquarium pump from Petco, and some aluminum tape. I arranged the pump to constantly oxygenate the water. The cups have holes drilled in their base. I filled them with a RR sponge and some Hydrotron clay pellets.

After five days, Ill add Heisenberg tea at the rate of 1cup tea to 1gallon of water.

So pull up a chair, relax, and enjoy the grow! Ill keep the best four clones, and donate the remaining to friends in need of terrific medical cannabis. I am interested in your feedback about the best DTW system for an organic grow. My moms are in soil now and that is cool, but I would like to get better growth performance. If I go soil, I would probably follow Doc Bud's lead and go Hi-Brix. But please.. share you thoughts on Organic soil or Organic DTW approaches.

Cheers, and happy growing everyone!! :thumb:

Subscribed. I am also growing Matanuska Thunderfuck or more commonly called Alaskan Thunderfuck.

Great to have you aboard! I spent the last 2 hours reading your LA Confidential journal. Great stuff! I'm honored to know that you pulled up a chair.

:high-five:

Little update tonight -

So far the little ones appear to be doing okay. They are keeping their color and remain "perky". Im not sure about the "experiment" cloner yet.. jury is still out but the cuttings in there look pretty healthy too.

Tomorrow I add the beneficial tea.
Making the tea -

This is Heisenberg's recipe, not mine.. but here is what I did anyway:
1 TSP Bat guano, High N
1 TSP Bat guano, High P
1 TSP Earthworm castings
1 TSP Mykos beneficial fungi

All of this goes into a stocking tied off.

20140103_015016087_iOS.jpg

I'm brewing up roughly 1/2 gallon. This will be added in 1cup / 1gal ratio
20140103_014857561_iOS.jpg

The dark color added is molasses and seaweed extract. Roughly 1TSP each. Ill bubble for at least 24 hrs and then add to the clones and some other plants not part of this journal.

I'm subbed. Matanuska thunderfuck is one of my favorite strains. Super potent!!! I have a little now. I'll take some macros and share!!! Good luck my friend!! ;) :)

And as for the organic suggestions. Try looking up the book True Living Organics by The Rev. It is said that you can get hydro results from an organic soil. It's a little late so I'm not going into details but I will be back to give a more in depth look at TLO growing. It's nice though because it's a water only grow style. Have a great night my friend!!

Thanks so much for the tip! Ill check out the book tonight. :)

So here we are on day 9 of cloning. I will open by stating that the bubbler experiment was a bust. Some little roots started, but for the most part I would have been way ahead simply staying with the RR plugs and a humidity dome. Speaking of... Here is a little bit of root porn for everyone. So far it appears that Im at about 50% success across both strains. MTF takes a bit longer so Ill run for another week in the dome.

I started adding the EWC tea yesterday. Those with roots responded well. I don't know about the others until the roots start to show. I do have some more cuttings next week; cuttings which are extremely hard to clone. Ill setup an aero cloner / Humidity dome race to see which ones make it fastest.

On another front, I decided to "minimize" my growing efforts. My only reason for growing is to provide medicinal benefits to my family. As such, I need quality over quantity. In order to support clones, vegging, and flowering I decided to convert an old refrigerator into an insulated grow tent.
20131231_005419012_iOS.jpg

The conversion will begin next week time permitting. My goal will be to root out the top 4-6 clones and flower them for the starting run. So... looks like this will be a journal for not only another grow but for a grow "room" build as well. Pull up a seat and join me!

Cheers!

We have roots!!

Nearly all of the clones were ready for replanting. Six of them need more time in the cloned, and four didn't look good enough to continue. For the first potting, I use a Perlite / Dolomite mix with a "mini hempy" style container. Here is the routine:

Step 1 - Get Dollar Store cups, a stepped bit from Harbor freight, and a cordless drill
WP_20140107_007.jpg

...Drill a 3/8" hole roughly one inch up from the bottom
WP_20140107_008.jpg

Step 2 - Fill the container with a little layer of the media, and then add Myco powder.
WP_20140107_009.jpg

WP_20140107_010.jpg

Step 3 - Gently insert the clone and top off with more media
WP_20140107_006.jpg

After the planting is done, I water with a fresh batch of EWC tea.
WP_20140107_011.jpg

The MTF strain is a little more sensitive to the humidity than the Tijuana. I added some lids to keep the moisture higher for a couple of days.
WP_20140107_012.jpg

I'll run two of the T5 tubes for a week and gradually "harden" them. There are 6 tubes in the light, and if they were all on right now the little ones would scorch for sure.

Oh.. and no update on the refrigerator yet. I'm too busy at work, and the mountain just got 30" of fresh powder so my son and I are heading out to snowboard tomorrow. :thumb:

Cheers!!

Long time, no post. Sorry for the delay. I was out of town for most of Feb. Here is an update from pics I took along the way...

1/11/14 -

I took some shots of the clones after three days in perlite. As you can see, the roots explode using this method

Summary -
I know it isnt the best way to kickoff a grow journal.. Ill get posts more frequently now that Im back in town for a while. To make up for it, here is a pic of the Matanuska from my current grow which has two weeks left (no journal for that one).

It finishes really well, and the smoke is amazing.

Small update.. I decided that it was time to crack some seeds.
20140220_031037427_iOS.jpg

Cannatonic, Vanilla Kush, and Cherry Berry

My method is pretty straightforward.. Distilled water in a paper towel. I learned that seeds usually always crack, but the failures typically happen because of "damping off" while they are young. Generally that happens because bacteria & fungus chokes off the little plant. I found the best way to prevent failures is to keep everything very clean. After the crack Ill place them in rapid rooters which were soaked in distilled water and Hydrozyme.

All for now,

So late Wednesday I put the seeds into paper towels. They rested out of the light in my closet at roughly 80 degrees. I looked at them yesterday and all three had cracked! That is pretty good for less than 48 hours. This morning all of them had tails long enough to be planted.

So it was time to prepare the Rapid Rooter plugs. I soaked them with a mixture of water, seaweed extract, and Hydrozyme PH'd to 5.6.
20140222_183842277_iOS.jpg

After creating the identity tags and placing the plugs into the tray, I donned a glove and began the delicate process of setting the seedlings.

..and then under the dome with a light shade for the 1st week...
20140222_185453331_iOS.jpg

I poured the "soaking" liquid into the tray so that it helps keep moisture up and gives the babies something to feed on when their roots reach that far.

Here are the cuttings. They got stressed while I was out of town but appear to be in better shape now. I have a little FIMing to do to keep them short and bushy. There are no more mites on them but Ill still spray preventatively a couple more times to catch any remaining eggs.

I checked in on the little girls tonight. They have made a lot of progress since I put them into paper towels last Wednesday night.

Here is the Cherry berry -
WP_20140225_001.jpg

The Cannatonic... She had a rough couple of days! The helmet was stubbornly staying on and choking the new leaves. I gently removed the shell and inner lining. She started to perk up in just a couple of hours.
WP_20140225_002.jpg

Finally, the Vanilla Kush. She is growing well.. like a weed!
WP_20140225_001.jpg

A couple days back I FIM'd the clones. They are looking bushy and healthy.

Well the last couple of weeks sucked!

Two of the three seeds damped off, and I nearly lost the last one (cannatonic). This was my 1st time sprouting seeds in the rapid rooters and it will be my last. Anyway, I cracked two more seeds so Im back to the same set (Vanilla Kush and Cherry Berry). The clones got a bad case of root rot too. Things just got too hot in the veg area, and I was on business trips. Anyway, I dunked the roots in an h2o2 solution, doused them with Myco powder, and plopped them into good soil. They are recovering nicely.

I harvested my last grow too. Pulled 10.92oz from a 400W. Not bad.. but not where I want to be. Terrific nugs though! The MTF strain really impressed me. I followed Doc Bud's washing routine and the smoke was smooth for both!

Speaking of Doc.. I ordered his kit. It arrived Monday 3/10 and I mixed the soil that night. Im looking forward to seeing the finished soil in a month. That will be about right for my seeds and cuttings. Gotta have the room ready.. Sigh.. I mixed up some of the "Stress" spray. It seems like it works for the clones. They are perking up. I dont know how often to spray them, so Im going with every other day.

Well that it.. I get some pics soon of the recovering girls. Anyone want some bud porn from the grow I just harvested?

Okay.. here is a dump of my grow happening in parallel with this one.

This is one of my taller MTF colas. Smells amazing!

after a good cut with Doc's wash, then a week of curing time.. I jarred everything. Final weight tally: 10.92. The apple in a couple of jars was because some of the nugs got too dry yesterday. Smoke was amazing.. smoothest ever! I dont smoke cigarettes anymore, but this felt just as smooth as a cigarette. I hope this journal will be as or more successful than the grow in these pics.
