Dank's Soil/Hydro Auto Grow Under CFLs

On 8/20/2013 I began my first attempt at DWC with a Freedom of seeds Pixie Punch. I started with your typical 2 liter bottle cutting the top to create a funnel. I then used black gorilla tape on the outside of the bottle to create the darkness I need to allow the roots to grow. I then purchased everything I needed for the oxygen setup at Wal-Mart for less than $15.00. I used a dual output air pump for an aquarium, tubing and a plastic T to connect both of the outputs to the medium size air stone I purchased at my local hydro store.

Using the funnel part of the 2 liter I mixed 50% perlite and 50% FFOF soil mixture. After moistening the soil good I then planted the seedling about an inch down in the soil. She is currently in temperatures that vary between 70-80 with a humidity of 55%. I am using a light cycle of 24/0 until she shows me a few sets of leaves, I will then change it up to 18/6. Once she begins to flower I will move her light cycle to 12/12. She is resting under a 65 watt 6500K CFL at this time. I had to preform a small surgery on her yesterday after she had sprouted. The seed shell was stuck and I pried the shell off gently with tweezers then had to cut the membrane off of the cotyledons with some small scissors. As of today she seems to be growing quite nicely.

A small twist on this grow my wife will be helping me, She has named her Miss Trixy. She found the name on a website for pixie names, Trixy means she who makes me happy!

Thanks for hanging around sir, really not a lot of action right now, at least until the roots grow down into the res, but I thought I would get it going anyway. I only have one closet I can use as a grow space, so no separate flower room, and I still have one more plant that is not quite ready. She has lived her whole life under 24/0 cycle, so I will let it finish, then switch to 18/6 for the new plant. I will be starting a new grow when I get some beans next week, so I think I may have to finish the dwc on 18/6 instead. Maybe I can build me a veg box in the next few days, so I can finish the pixie, then clean up and put the new plants to flower.

I realize this a little like watching paint dry, so here's some pics from my other grow, almost completed.

Good to have you along shrub, I'm sure it will be an interesting ride later on, the roots should reach the res in a week, as long as I can keep it alive! I'm still not sure about the light cycle I will use, not sure I can afford to build a veg box right now, but we'll she how she does with 18/6 if I have to go that route.

The baby is doing well on day 4, but kinda slow compared to most autos I've seen. The second set of leaves is showing now, and all is well for now, just have a question for KJC. I picked up some diatomaceous earth, and put a thin layer over the top of the soil, and I haven't seen a fungus gnat since. My question is this; can I treat the soil with this stuff before I plant my seeds, or should i apply it after they sprout? Just not sure if they would germinate properly with it already in the soil, but I like this stuff already!

I have not yet incorporated diotomaceous earth into my soil mixture but a friend of mine who is an organic grower was looking for a source of pumice to add to his soil mixture, i believe diotomaceous earth could be substituted for the pumice. for now i would just keep a layer on the top of the soil to prevent soil insects from entering the soil.

sub'd, can't wait to see where this is headed! My seedling is about the same size as yours we'll have to compare notes as the days roll on.

Happy Labor Day everyone, just thought I would update real quick. After my short trip out of town this weekend, I came home and discovered seed pods all over my last girl in flower. I chopped it, trimmed it, and when dry I'm sure it will make some nice hash. The seedling is still very small, with only 4 leaves, and less than an inch tall, but very healthy looking. I switched to 18/6 today, after installing a large pc fan for exhaust. The roots are less than an inch from the hole now, so maybe the 18/6 will get them to the res quicker. When the lights are back on, I will post some pics of the changes to my space, which I am not finished with, but looks a lot better than when I started.

There is at least a little progress to report, I uploaded some pics, and there is some new growth popping from the center of the seedling. The roots are quite close to the res now, so I should be able to fire up the pump in a few days or so. I'm surprised at how slow this auto is, but I've read that some auto strains start slow, then hit a big growth spurt. Either way it looks very healthy, and temps are perfect in my space now, thanks to a free pc fan I picked up from a computer repair shop.

Nice buds :) Happy Med.

Ya but this is the stinkiest, tastiest, most amazing paint to watch dry! Good luck with the Autos! I've got some that are huge and just starting to bust out the buds. Check it out! +reps and subed for sure!

Thank you to all who have subbed, and I hope we can all learn something along the way, I definitely need all the info I can absorb. This is day 16, and no roots still, but the baby is still very healthy looking, and making slow progress. The roots are nearing the opening, but are growing quite slow. They are very healthy looking, nice white color, just slow developing, any suggestions to make the roots grow quicker guys? My first grow was autos under 24/0 the whole grow, and the roots had just started to circle in 1 gallon pots after close to 70 days. I know someone tested 18/6 vs. 24/0 and 18/6 was best for root development, but can I use rooting hormones this early without damaging the baby? I'm open to suggestions, this noob needs some schooling!

This little plant is definitely a pixie, 16 days in, and still under an inch tall. Hoping it will take off when the roots hit the res, but I'll be happy just to get some decent smoke off the dirty little tramp, lol.
