There was a headshop about 45 minutes away but being a teenager living with your parents, who didn't even drink kind of put the brakes on glass pipes so rolling joints was the way to go. I picked it up pretty quick having observed the oldtimers rolling tobacco from a can with single wides. We could get double wide "reefer roller" papers at the convenience stores in town, the pink ones for some reason were the most popular. I felt as sheepish as a Howdy Doody 16yr old asking for a pack of the pink double wide papers from the middle aged cashier as I did buying condoms from the same cashier.
... We were both suspended and sent home... Not the best for a first time but I can vouch it got better each time after.

Niether of us felt high just cold...so we go back in school for lunch....and as soon as we entered the heat of the school.....we were higher than the moon....and sure enough the administrator that stopped us knew by looking at us

Was the late 70's I didn't start till I was 16, my first joint was hash because that's all we could get here at the time, I think it's easier to roll hash and tobacco together, but that is how I learned to roll lol
