Borntorun's 2009 outdoor grow.snottygirl

Re: borntorun's 2009 outdoor grow..snottygirl

I am going to see if I can get my hands on some of the nettle tea..

We can't get rid of it around here. I'm letting it grow up around the plants now. It's suppose to be the only companion plant that increase the essential oils in plants grown next to it. Studies with lavender show a 10% increase in flower oil when nettle was grown with it. One of the chemicals in it provokes some sort of survival response in plants. I'm doing an experiment on two of the plants where you actually whip the plant with a stinging nettle. The sting has serotonin in it besides dozen of unidentified compounds. I'm hoping to get some buds with superior pain relief qualities.

I'm totally a mad scientist.

Sounds like a plan, hope that works out for you. Nice job.

Still no flowers...probably another 20 days. Growing about an inch a day, so they may make 5 foot before flowering starts. These are the clones in garden 3 that are about 5 weeks behind the monsters in garden 1

starting to get a little stem building on the clones now.

Those are some healthy looking ladies. That stem is getting some girth on it. great job. I have a Papaya clone I put in the ground a few weeks ago. I was hoping it would not start to flower for a few weeks maybe next month. No such luck went up there today and it is in full bloom. I was hoping to get it 3 or 4 feet before flower. I guess I will have to settle for 2 ft. Anyway, my first grow I should be happy with what I get. Graet job. Keep up the good work...

I'd sure like to know how your plants burst into bloom as soon as you put them out. You are going to have to start getting them out in April.

I posted that "girdling" link specifically for you and 420fied because you guys are so into the technical side of things, and so am I!

Man every time I see these outdoor trees been veggin SUN awhile I want to grab my little no veg single colas and call daddy. Don't know why it's such a surprize every time I see the sturdy stalk of a naturally grown hybrid bitch, but I mentally check my stock of viagra and shiver a bit. Is Snottygirl Daddys' Girl?

Takes more after mom who was pure sativa, but should pick up dad's trait of indica heavy dense buds but still with a sativa high. Some of that will depend on harvest timing, weather and the girdling timing. Girdling throws a lot of carbs and hormones at the flowers and that changes things.

Re: borntorun's 2009 outdoor grow..snottygirl

Girdling scares me. Can you elaborte on the how and why you are going to do it?

Read this link or google "gidling to increase yield" for the real technical part of it.
It's been done for hundreds of years and Acapulco Gold was originally girdled. Basically look at it this way. the stem or trunk on plants is a two way freeway with water carrying nutes traveling up the center of the trunk (xylem) through osmosis and hormones and carbs traveling from the leaves to the flowers and fruit and at the same time back down to the roots to feed them (through the outside of the stem, the cambium layer)
When you girdle (by one of several methods) you stop the downward flow of sugars to the roots. The roots are still capable of sending water and nutes up but without the sugar they will slowly die off. That extra sugar will flow to the flowers and fruits. You will also get a build up of some of the growth hormones above the girdle. That is why the stem gets larger above the girdle. It works best on trees, where the girdle will heal and the sugars will eventually flow back down to the roots. It works really well on grapes. Cannabis is a perennial so the roots are going to die off anyway. And we don't let them go to fruit so the timing is best a week or so before harvest. Someone told me you can force a plant to flower by girdling but have never tried it. You can experiment by just doing one branch on one plant and mess around with timing. I use wire but have also heard zip ties will work. You want to just crimp down through the cambium layer.
Think of it also like the results you get when you thin a fruit tree, you lose some fruit but the ones left are way bigger with higher sugars and in the case of grapes, more solids that produce the better wines.
The other positive you get is faster drying times as towards the end the roots just can't transport water upwards.

I'm by no means the expert botanist so some of the above might not be textbook correct, but you get the idea.

I'll post some pictures as I'm doing it.

Excellent response. Thank you. I may look into it depending on how it goes for you.

I would love to figure that out myself. My super lemon haze still has not started to flower and its been out for three months. No such luck with the rest.

regarding the girdling sounds like it would be worth a try. A little on the scary side.

damn thick stems mean thick buds

Re: borntorun's 2009 outdoor grow..snottygirl

I just posted this over on sonzor's journal and thought I would do it here to as it is getting closer and closer to harvest time.

If you keep your buds in mason jars it is well worth it to get some vacuum caps from Amazon.

you basically fill the jar up, set the sealing cap on, slip this cap on and hit it with a shop vac or vacuum pump. Remove it and put the ring on. You will have a pretty good vacuum, more then you get from the seal a meal. If you use a vacuum pump you will get a really strong vacuum. Enough that you have to be careful not to bump the jars. If you are real careful when you open and don't dent the lid you can re-use them.
