Kush DWC grow

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

Nice job bro, thats some good odds with those seeds minus those f'en hermies. just killing it on the dwc..

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

Thanks dogstick. Hermies suck for sure but I'm thinking it might have been stress that caused it. I've only found one male flower in the last few days and that was on a plant that already had some before. I tagged any that have had male flowers so I don't try cloning them but other than that it's looking OK. Some of them had opened but I never saw any pollen released so maybe they weren't viable or I just got them before they got their rocks off. :0)

You have yourself a Merry Xmas and a blazed New Year! C'ya

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

Wow - I am very impressed with the roots in your DWC! Maybe the 35% peroxide was the missing ingredient for me. Very nice grow man - I've been steering newbies looking to go hydro to this thread! :nicethread:

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

Thanx obx. I've used the H2O2 for years and never had a root problem. I was just catching up on your grow and will pop back when I'm done here.

C'ya at your place. :peace:

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

you've inspired me! i'm going to build a DWC setup.

this is what i'm thinking.

1- 10gal Rubbermaid Roughneck container (approx $12)
3- 12" air stones ($4 ea)
1- 10gal aquarium air pump ($30)
10' air hose ($3)
2- 6" net pots ($1.25 ea)
10L bag Hydroton ($12)
1" Rockwool cubes ($13/200)
Nutrients (all AN):
-Grow/Micro/Bloom (approx $37)
or
-Mother Earth Super Tea Grow/Bloom (approx $40)
-Jumpstart ($19)
or
-Juicy Roots ($20)
-Rhino Skin ($29)
and
- raw cane sugar (free!)

what do you think man?

I think I'm with you on most of what you're going with there, but as I've never used other than the AN Grow/Micro/Bloom with a little Dr. Horsby's Big Bud for the last few weeks of flowering I can't be a good source of info on your other nutrient options. As I believe hydrogen peroxide to be essential to my way of doing things and it's not compatible with organics you'll be looking for answers elsewhere or flying solo tho I'd sure like to see how it goes otherwise. I've been curious about using organics in a tub grow and may try AN's organic hydro line in the near future.

If you are going to go with 6" pots I'd cut the holes small enough that the pots sit up high so you don't lose space for nutes. The 6" are pretty tall and will hang down deeper in the tub taking up space. Once the roots get huge you'll need every ml. of space you can get for nutes. All the net pots I have are solid for a ways down from the top so as long as the holes in the pot are under the lid there is no problem letting them sit up. If your holes are a little too big wrap electrical tape around the pot so it fits better and sits higher. I'm using 4" and 5" pots and have the larger pots sitting higher so that both tubs hold equal sol'n. Makes calculating stuff easier. Get 2 tubs it will make nute changes easier. I'm doing one as soon as I'm done here and will post pics. Good root porn coming!

IMO 3 12" stones is overkill. I use 1 in each tub and a 30 gallon, dual outlet air pump. It was $38 but that was in an expensive pet store not Wall-Mart plus everything cost more up here in the Great White North. The brand I have is a Maxima-R. Avoid the Elite pumps as they have this crappy little latex reed valve in there that blows real easy. Step on the hose and it's gone or it just goes for the hell of it. You can buy repair kits but that doesn't help if the valve goes and you don't catch it for a while. They're noisier too. I lost power for about 50 hours one time and suffered no damage but added extra peroxide and stirred so who knows.

I would get 2 air lines as well and not cut them. If you hang your pump on a spring or bungie cord to quiet it you'll have more flexibility when positioning things in your room and can tie up excess hose if you need to. Same thing if it sits on the floor like mine I guess. lol

You should be good to go. Just drop a line if you've got any questions, or ideas. I'm not averse to learning new stuff either that's what makes this so much fun. Doing the grow I'm doing was an experiment to see how many plants these tubs could handle. I think I'll have to double up on the next round. NOT! It's a jungle in there as it is with the 24 or 25 I've got now. :0)

Lots of detail in the journal when you get going. Not so I can pick it apart but maybe pick up some tips. Sometimes the most obvious things are . . . "DUH? Why didn't I think of that?" Only when the mad cow is acting up. ;0)

Merry Xmas man and don't OD on the turkey! :peace:

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

i was leaning toward the Grow/Micro/Bloom. it's a little cheaper. also, i could use the H2O2 then. you've shown excellent results from it..
the rhino skin is potassium silicate. it's supposed to harden stems, leaves, etc to make it less susseptable to pests and disease. i like the idea, since i have trouble with mites from time to time.
the juicy roots and jump start are for starting clones as that's what i like for growing. it helps to keep strong plants going and makes sure there're no men in the bunch.
i was thinking 6" net pots cause of the larger diameter, but really, that shouldn't matter since the growth is down into the tub and not outward like in soil. i was thinking of using 1" cubes, but would i be better served to use the 4" ones?
i wasn't really sure about the airstones, i figured, the more air, the better. but cutting back to 1 just saves money. if i go with just 1 tub, i'd only need one stone, yes? if i were to expand to a second tub, i could always add a "T" connection in the line and split it from there, yes?
the idea of a second tub for nute switches is great, one i'm definately using.

this won't happen right away, but, in about 3 - 4 months, i'll have the 4 i'm growing finished (hopefully) and will then have the open room. i'd like to compare soil vs hydro at that point. run two 5gal pots and the 10gal tub to determine what works better. i really like the cleanliness of hyrdo, as well as the control you can exibit over the plants growth.

i figure this whole setup will cost in the range of $140. is that roughly inline with your experience?

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

did you get a pile of snow too? (sorry to jack yer thread)

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

No problemo and no snow here. It's only -17C and clear skies ahead.

Grow/Micro/Bloom sounds great, I know where I'm at with that. Silica is great and I used it tonight. Stick with the one inch cubes and bury them with the Hydroton when you put them in the pots. If you wait until the clones/seedlings are root-bound it would be a good idea to rip out as much of the cube as you can without damaging the roots too much. Then set the baby right on the bottom of the pot and bury it up to the bottom of the leaves. As it grows up add more Hydroton until the pot is full. By then the plant is rockin'!

Right on with the air stones but a 10 gal pump will only be good for one tub. If you only get one pump get a repair kit with it and don't lose the instructions. Shop around, a 10 gal pump should be cheaper than $30. Or buy a pump like mine with 2 outlets, run 2 stones and if one side of the pump fails you'll still have one stone running. Cheap insurance for sure.

Close.
Pump $40 dual outlet, ball-park figure
2 stones 20
Air lines 6
2 tubs 25
Basket pots 5
Cubes, I don't use them 0 :0)

That's $96 + nutes and misc. I would suggest getting at least one spare stone and a repair kit for whatever pump you decide on. pH and TDS meter are a necessity but if you can't get the TDS meter I can guide you with the ppm as I keep some notes and know those AN nutes.

Gotta run. My pics from the nute change are up and the wine, pot and unknown pain meds are kicking in. lol I want to post this stuff before the curtain comes down.

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

High y'all. Just a quick update and a little how-to on my style of nute change.

I just drug the 4-hole tub off the dolly, plants and all and put the empty tub on the dollie. I put an old stone and pump in there to get things bubblin' after I filled the tub to it's normal topped up level which for me is about a half inch below the rib 5" below the top of the tub. The first thing I add is the silica or liquid rock. This raised the pH to 9.0. I used 8 or 9 mls of some commercial pH down to get it to 6.0. Now I know to shoot 7.5 mls in and add dropwise until I hit 6.0. I leave the pH meter hanging in the tub and stir with a big spoon to mix it up quicker. I added 10 ml (dry) MgSO4, epsom salts and that brought the PPM up to 120. Silica - 30 and 90 for the salts. Looking over my notes I decided to aim for 1000 PPM and will up it in a few days. I used 50ml Grow and a 100ml each of Bloom and Micro and ended up with 980 PPM. Damn, that chemical diploma comes in handy once in a while. lol

After adding the nutes the pH was dead on the money at 5.6. It usually tends to wander up toward 6 for a few days while everything settles in then will stay around 5.6 for weeks on end. If it gets to 6.2 I might add a few drops of concentrated sulphuric acid just to move it down 0.2 or so. Then it seems to drop on it's own and stabilizes.

Then it's just a simple matter of picking up the plants and dropping them on top of the fresh tub. Make sure your sitting down for the next pics . . .

I'll do the other one in a few days and see if there is a noticeable difference in the buds or over-all look of the two tubs. First change since I started 40 days ago. Talk about lazy! lol

This is the old nutes.

I forgot this pic. This is the one getting moved. The 4-holer with 14 girls. The damaged fan leaves are from the 150W HPS I keep down low to fatten up the lower buds.

Re: LabRat's latest Kush DWC grow.

Niiicccceeee!!!! Looking very good, roots and buds both. Can't wait to see them fill out. LabRat, you set the standard around here for DWC... plus I've got to say I love the lazy grow... takes a smart man to cut the right corners. You have it dialed in for sure.
