Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

hi mate, that plants doing crazy with cfls, i started with cfls and they got me well into flower, i switched to hps due to using nearly 400watts with the cfls so it made sense,

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Hi donpaul.p,
It surprises me how well cfl's work, I have considered a 400 watt hps but I think it would
be too hot in a confined space like mine. Right now I am using...
4 x 42 = 168 watt
6 x 26 = 156 watt = 324 watt total
I can hold my hand less than an inch from my bulbs and it's not hot at all.
Don't think I would be able to do that a foot away from an hps?
What happened to your temps when you made the switch?

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

to be honest mate i struggle to keep temps down, loads of growers say cfls produce a shed load of heat, well the truth is they dont, you can hold them in your hand and they are not hot, but when i switched to hps my temps hit the roof and headed into the 90's when the outside temp was in the 20's so now when the lights on i leave the grow door open and if its still to hot i have another bigger fan blowing into the room forcing the cool air in and hot air out, its the only way i could keep the temps in check, my hps is roughly about 1 foot above the plants, any lower and temps get high at plant level

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

What a great grow wow!:Namaste: Your plant looks awesome I am subscribed and pulling up a chair for this one! I noticed you and donpaulp talking in his thread about using a cell phone charger with pc fans. I used these on my last grow along with a smaller fan and it was all i need. Please keep up the good work and I will be here to offer any advice if possible!

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Thank you geturgrowon and welcome,
Those are some amazing buds, hope I can get buds half as nice as those look.
Your artwork is impressive as well.....

Thanks and welcome K-Frat,
I know I am going to need all the help I can get so thanks for the offer.
The pc fans are great, very quiet and seem to move the air rather well.

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Hi and thank you Hash Hound, great screen name.
This NL seed is from KC Brains.
I checked your journal for your 18 week NL grow and thought I was looking at my
first attempt this winter. I stopped counting days after day 120 flower 99.
Below is a pic on day 120, I checked the trich's all over the plant and they all appeared clear.
IMG_110811.jpg

Guessed that I was doing many things wrong so I let it go another 2-3 weeks. A foxtail bonanza.
No amber trich's and very few cloudy. It got plain water for about a month or more,
afraid as you were to give any nutes thinking her time was right around the corner.
Here it is when I chopped her. Sadly the main cola had a lot of bud rot, had to toss more than half of it.
There was little to no smell and taste. It did the trick but was very harsh. Learned a lot and hope
my current grow goes better.

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Back to my current grow...

Day 49 Flower 14
8 cups- 1 Tbs Bloom + 1 tsp Grow + 1 tsp Catalyst
Mixed in 1 gallon of tap water and bubbled for about 48 hrs.
Low PH around 5
19"+
Switched around some lights, I plan on keeping this set up till the end.

2700 k - 6 x 42 watts = 252 watts 6 x 2,800 lumens = 16,800 lumens
2700k - 2 x 26 watts = 52 watts 2 x 1,700 lumens = 3,400 lumens
6500k - 2 x 26 watts = 52 watts 2 x 1,700 lumens = 3,400 lumens

total = 356 watts - 23,600 lumens

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

that plant looks like a monster plant, sorry to hear about the rot, can i just ask you know when the pistils turned orange, how long after that did you harvest,

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

NL

sorry to hear about the bud rot. I have had it on every grow so far except the last one. Nothing drastic, but did have to throw some buds away. Might have been the high brix and teas the last grow that helped prevent it this time.

I'm not sure why these plants seem to take so long. Maybe they need more than 12 hours dark or something. I wish I knew.

you ever consider switching to a MH or HPS?
for a few more watts than you have now, a 400w MH is like 36,000 and HPS is 55,000 lumens

a 250w hps is 35,000, less watts and more lumens

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Hi donpaul.p,
After looking thru my pics. from that grow it looks like the hairs began to turn orange around day 63 flower 42.
It was chopped down at around day 135 flower 114. So 72 days.... Now let me say that grow was a mess.
Plant was root bound and over cooked. It kept foxtailing with new white pistils all over the buds. This pic shows
new growth with white pistils and receding orange ones

Re: NLnovice's Northern Lights,Soil,CFL,Cabinet Grow 2012

Advice and opinions needed....

These 2 pics are the bottom fan leaves. I assume that this is normal.
Guessing that because these leaves are not getting much light the plant
has no use for them so they are left to die.

day50-6.jpg

Next 2 pics. are a white cobweb on the soil surface.
From what I have read this is referred to as santa's beard.
Maybe mycelium fungi. This might be beneficial and shows that soil is
alive. My questions are....

Is this good?
If it is not what should I do?
I will be watering tomorrow, should I just water them into the soil?

NL - Plant is looking fantastic and the photos are great. I'm envious of those buds and can't wait till mine reach the flowering stage.

I agree, lower leaves just aren't getting the light they need - those leaves will dry up and fall off. It happens with most all plants in my garden.

Yes, normal appearing fungus that is just a sign of soil decomposition. Nothing at all to worry about.

Hope this helps.
