No Pains: Grandmommy Purple By Herbies In RDWC & Supplemental CO2

No Pain

Well-Known Member
Hello ! All are welcome ! Its been awhile since I have done a Jornal . I have made a few upgrades such as sealing the room , adding a/c and co'2 Not to mention some new lights ! This will be my first run with the new toys ,So this should get interesting or at the bare minimum show some decent plants :) .

The Strain: Grandmommy Purple by Herbies seeds....... always wanted to grow GDP and when I saw these I thought i would give them a go.

The System: customized current culture rdwc....by customized I mean my own aeration system and res relocation .

The Nutes : These run I'm running with what I started with in the 90's ...good old Genral hydroponics flora trio ..

The nute strength: I will be following a chart off of (If I can say it ) Grow weed easy .

The Lights : I will be using Spectrum King 403's ... I used to use 402's ... I like them .

The environment : I have a couple of vpd charts to look at ....so this is still kinda open .....

Co2 levels .... Im leaning towards 800-1000 ppm

Here are some starter Pictures..

okay so what you looking at are plants that are two weeks from seed , i had them in a homade hydro set up in a tent while i prepped the room , I can post pics if people are interested . I transplanted them two days ago . current ppm is 600 and ph is 6.2 ...this run I'm going to focus on keeping it in the 6's . Why you ask ? well we all know that growing plants under led lights do require a bit more cal mag so i say what not move the scale so its more available instead of adding more ? Also did i mention I'm using tap water this run ? lol yes you heard right Tap water ...my tap water is 150 ppm and based on analysis it carries anywhere from 50-70 ppm of calcium , I am using the Flora Micro for hard water . Now i do have an Ro System and i have used it ever grow since its purchase and this time around I wanted to try something a little different and less wastefull as with ro system it can take 3 gallons of tap to produce 1 gal of ro .

Also this round instead of blasting my plants with lights I'm going to focus on a max of around 700 ppfd . why ? basically due to some research as well as me witnessing things that resembled overfeeding that was actually to much light for the plant to process ..right now at this light distance these young ladies are getting an average of 375 ppfd give or take the accuracy of my meter wich tends to read a little on the low side .

so this journal is not just about growing nice plants but about what adjustments we can do to better our and our plants grow experience ...growing with leds is not the same as growing with hid's and I have yet to find a true in depth look at what we can do different for better results under these great lights ...dont get me wrong i have had wonderful results thus far , but what if , just what if some small minor changes in what is within our ability can make those results even better ??? I say Lets find out as all we really have to lose is time and we have everything to gain !

Alrighty , here we are 3 days after the addition of Co2 in the room at an average of 650 and these things are loving it ! So much so that I decided I would take some measurements for the record as it appears that they are gaining about an 1- 11/2 inches a day and what better way to keep me honest and my imagination from running wild than pictures to prove it .

Now as you look at the pictures you will see that my res temp is 77 ... my water chiller went on the fritz and I just finished installing my backup chiller although its smaller but it is capable of handling the res load . I have been keeping it at 70 degrees so its working on bringing it down now ....I believe in having backups of main components as you never know what can happen and when ..for rdwc i recommend a back up chiller, air pump and water pump not to mention air stones if you use them ...

anyway as of right now temp is a steady 79 with a humidity anywhere from 45-50 ......leaf temps are 71 ...so not to bad will be adding a humidifier next week (as soon as my filters come in ) to get the rh bumped up to 65 so i can hit that sweet spot in the vpd chart .

well thats it for now ...on with the pics enjoy !

I am thinking of running this strain soon. And hopefully I'll pick up some RDWC tricks. Nice setup.

Welcome aboard and Thank you ...it has taken me a bit to get everything in the room that I not only needed but wanted . I will definitely be sharing my knowledge and experience as well as listening to peoples thoughts and opinions . I'm going a little against the grain this run lol . so feel free to ask whatever question comes to mind .

also congratulations on your achievements thus far !!

Okay so here we are 48 hrs later ...did a res change and reinstalled my bigger chiller ...boosted feed up to 720 here in the beginning portion of what would be the 2nd part of veg ...these ladies are loving life ...I also put a humidifier in the room to get up to are 65 ..temps around the plants are 77-78 steadily ,leaf temps are a cozy 71 . more than likely i will have to get an ideal air humidifier to keep it there easily and even higher if needed for vpd as my a/c and this humidifier are having a battle lol . the temp are the guardian is after the res change and fresh install og the chiller , i usually keep it around 72 for now . Now on with the Pics !!

for those that would like to see the type of aeration in the buckets ..here ya go !

alright the only thing this has to do with the main room is its the tent i started 6 of the grandmommy purple in and there are two left that i need to do something with ..i found them a home and the person I'm going to give them to is going to grow them outside in soil .

Since you really don't see it I figured I would show the process . Now this is my first transplant from hydro to soil however i am familiar with growing in coco and soil as well as transplanting . I can take a proof of life pic later this week . lol

Anyway
First select your containers in this case i chose 1 gallon pots .
Second select your soil. I chose fox farm mixture of ocean forest and happy from
third select your feed ... i chose fox farm
fourth get your root growth stimulator ...i chose azos ...I love this stuff for coco and soil

now that you are ready fill your pots with dirt and rinse about 1 1/2 times a nutrient mix of water through it . let it rest to drain completely then scoop out the center as deep as you feel it should go . i stayed about two inches from the bottom of the pots for this one ( the root mass is going to be nice and snuggly in the hole when I'm done . put the scooped dirst in a sperate container . Now take your azos and sprinkle it all over the hole as well as all over the dirt in the container ( mix the dirt in the container afterwards ). Put some of the powder in a baggie . You are ready no to pull your plant out of the hydro system and stick the root mass in the baggie and mix it like you are breading chicken or fish ..you get the picture ..this is to get it all over in and around the root mass that was in the hydro system . after you have it covered really well put it in the hole gently and hold the plant at the height you want and take the dirt from that you put in the container and strt filling it in after your pot is full press down gently on the center just to make sure your plant is planted .. put any left over powder in a mixtire of nute solution and run about half the pot size through the pot and your are done ..she is ready to be put back in the light .
Now for the reason i love azos as well as mycos ....when you use them in coco or soil when transplanting your plants do not go through any type of shock as a matter of fact they explode ! now i didnt have any myco so they only received azos and i do not think these will explode by i do feel they wont suffer from shock .

I hope that you have found this informative and at the very least interesting . now on with the pics !!

Nice tutorial. I would not have thought to coat the roots like that but it makes sense. I'll be planting hydro clones in a couple of weeks and I will definitely try this. Thanks.

Thank you ! yes coating the roots makes a difference , I never thought of it until i tried it when I first starting using azos and mycos and it being recommended by them . After I did it the first time i was sold !

okay things are on fire in the main room and now I am an advocate for co2 in a sealed room as the growth rate is incredible and now that the plants are bigger the humidifier is off and the rh is right where i want it for the vpd that I'm striving to hit . I'm thinking when I go Into flower I'm going to have to install a dehumidifier to keep it where I want it . Now I'm unsure how long a 20lb bottle will last ..they have been in co2 for 9 days at an average of 650 ppm and based on the gauge only half the bottle has been used to this point . I do anticipate the plants using more as they get bigger and have more of an ability to use it .

They are growing at such a rapid rate I'm pondering flipping them this weekend and that is just about a full two week veg !

in the pics you will see the two i transplanted earlier this week ..the larger gave me a little attitude yesterday lol ..nothing major just a little wilt late in the day ..the smaller one has been a champ !

I will make a separate post showing the difference in 9 days in the c02 in the room as to me it speaks for it self .

On with the pics !

day 1 to day 9 ..apologies for the different pic sizes . ...edited : I have 3 lights hanging in the event I want more in flower , I have only had two running to this point .

This morning in order to keep things as even as possible , I decided to top the tallest plants as they both seem like they would hit the 5' marker the one on the far right and the 3rd one in form the right side . The other two seem like they will go toe to toe as far as height. This weekend is definitely going to be my flip to 12/12 . these things are on fire as i have never had things this far on just two weeks of veg .. i feel its the co2 1st coupled with vpd second that is giving me these results . Im going to let them go natural so i can see the stretch /take clones and more than likely scrogg them next time i grow them out . we shall see . Btw these leaf's are huge ! lol

Wow I was looking at those seeds to that thc % is drool worthy lol I like your setup, I dreamed of doing something like that then realized how much it’d cost for me and I don’t know have the time to make the investment worth it. Following for future hydro plant porn and tutorials :)
yes they are supposed to be up there in thc%. Thank you on the compliments of the set up . It is an investment and it has taken me years to get to this point . I will say that I'm grateful for what it is that I have and it improves the growing experience even more . I started in the mid 90's yes mid 90's growing in a basement in soil in covered dog kennels with fluorescents . lol My first foot into hydro was Emily's garden by hydrofarm a year or so after that . lol

Welcome aboard and enjoy the show . I'm excited to see how its ends !

alrighty Today we did a res change for transition to flower and set the timer today will be a 14hr day for the ladies and tomorrow will be their first day of 12/12 , they where previously on a 17/6 light schedule .

I couldn't help but flip them today as they are growing fast (its still amazes me that this is only two weeks in the room ) and i have 3 different phenos's as you can see in the pictures starting from the far right ...the one on the end and the 3rd one in are the same , the second one in and the last one are close but they are still different .... those two are short and compact with very complex branching ..the two that are the same pheno are taller with a more open structure .

I gave the taller ones a slight trim of the lower branches nothing major and i left the leaf's alone , the others i didn't touch as its very tight in there and the majority are close to the top on those anyway . depending on how they do in the stretch I may ending switching the plants around simply because of height difference and maintain even lighting . I will be putting up my Scrogg trellis this week just to weave around them for support . for some reason im partial to the pheno that's the second one in from the right . I'm thinking of cloning her so i can run her in all 4 buckets next run or the following .

nutes are at 750 , 73 degrees and 6.3 on the ph . room is at a comfy 77 degress , leaf temps around 71.5 and rh 58-60..things are looking good ...you be the judge .
