I Want To Be The Very Best - First Grow!

"I want to be the very best, like no one ever was... to catch them is my real test, to train them is my cause....Mari-juan-a!"

To steal a tune from the Pokemon theme song, I want to be the an amazing grower. I just graduated from a great university with my Master's in Accounting, so I think my mind should be up for bringing a well-developing plant into this world. My goal with this grow is to yield 1 oz of bud.

Currently, I have 3 seedlings germinating - each about 6 days since planting. From what I have read, chances are only 1 of these plants will be female and worth continuing to grow.

Right now:
Strain: Sour Diesel
Lights: I have (2) 25 Watt CFL @ 6500K going 24 hrs a day on them. The plants are ~3 inches away from bulb.
Medium: They are planted in a nice potting soil (20-5-5), but only have 3"x3"x3" soil container - transplanting in a week or two to at least 3 gallon bucket. I do not have a pH or EC test kit. I plan on obtaining one before transplanting.
Nutrients: I will never say "nutes". They haven't been feed any yet, I am under the impression the soil can provide all of the seedling nutrients for the first few weeks of life. - If you want to correct me on this, please have your sources ready. I do have some 8-5-5 fertilizer waiting, and I plan on obtaining bloodmeal (and maybe even wormcastings?)
Co2: I have no supplementation, but considering adding Turbo Yeast to produce some C02 in the coming weeks. Temperature: I don't have a thermometer on the plants, but the house is at 73 F all-day. The CFLs do produce some heat, but I have a small fan that is effective at keeping them cool. The Relative Humidity is probably a bit low, and have not been monitoring it.

I will post pics, but so far the plants look great. One has a bit too much growth on top for it to support itself, but a little training seems to correct it fine.

Hi TickledWizard.

Welcome to the 420 Magazine site and community of members that gathers here! :welcome:

I like that you have a reasonable expectation of yield with your first grow and hope that you are pleasantly surprised by both yield and number of girls with which you end up!

:welcome: to :420:

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

Thanks for the reply TanR!

I plan on using the SCROG method when they get older. Today is the end of Day 7 and they are beginning to sprout there second set of leaves! (not including the cotyledon)

I can't wait for it to start to look bushy :)

I have added a humidifier in the room next to the plants. I don't have a temp or humidity reader, but know it's 89% outside @30 F. If the water capacity of air doubles every 20 degrees, that means there is just over 20% RH inside. I know plants will grow more under higher humidity.

I plan on getting a gauge and pH kit soon.

:thanks:

:ciao:
Can't find the moon beams today, too much drifting/blowing SNOW!
Hey TickledWizard, there are several growers on the site that have made C02 set ups for thier grows. When you get to that point, we can link to a thread or two for them. :)

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

It's snowing here also.

welcome to :420: this is a great group of growers who are willing to help.
I'm subd. Excited to see what you have!!!

As far as your soil being enough for your seedlings, you are correct!! You should not need any additional nutrients. I would suggest a myco blend and some molasses. These 2 things will help keep your soil nice and happy.

I will be stopping back and giving more advice later!!! Can't wait to see pics!!!!

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

Definitely subbed this is going to be great I haven't started my first grown yet but I plan on being the very best so you going to have to move over! Lol best of luck to you Wizard can't wait to see them girls.

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

Thanks for the feedback and subscriptions everyone!

I am waiting on finding our SD card so I can upload the pictures. My gf has a nice Canon Rebel so I am sure I will be able to make some juicy bud porn with that!

The leaves were starting to droop a little resembling the McDonald's arching 'M'. I backed off the watering and they quit that quickly.

I finally got a humidifier in the setup and now the plants are being blasted with pure humidity and seem to love it.

Pictures soon! Thanks again for reading :)

Whiz, if your using an HTC phone upload the IMG pics & not the thumbnail pics. They store two copies of every pic you take.

I like your sense of humor, tickledwizard. I think your name told me you were going to be a comedic kind of guy. :laughtwo:
The lil' seedlings look lovely. I always find it amazing that those little bitty stalks can hold up those great big leaves. LOL
Have a grrrreat evening!

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

Thanks cannafan.

I do try and keep things humorous in my neck of the woods :thanks:

The largest plant's stem actually can't support the growth on top and I have to use a tie down to keep her upright. This seems to work fine for now, but will this be a problem later on?

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

Looking good! I am just starting my first grow so Don't take what I say as fact; but when mine started leaning I just started rotating the plant so it had to start leaning the opposite way. It seemed to work for mine as they are standing straight and it seemed to strengthen the stems. :surf:

Il be following along as it seems like our plants are close in time. :yummy:

Here's a couple ideas, You can add some soil, so the stem is covered deeper, that will add a little more support. Looks like you have room for more soil if needed.
And a small fan so the plants get a gentle breeze can help to strengthen the stems up. Not blasting them, just a light breeze. I have mine pointed up toward the light fixture and the plants get a gentle wind.
I think you said your CFL is ony about 3" away, so it sounds like it won't be reaching and stretching too much.
Hope that helps a little. :thumb:

I agree with the adding more soil. This method I feel helps in different ways. First it adds that extra support seedlings need. And second is that any part of the stem that gets buried by soil will start to root. This gives you a little more solid tap root that will keep her steady. Also the breeze from a fan is a great way to strengthen the stems. Other than that the babies are looking awesome and healthy!!!

Re: I want to be the very best... first grow!

THanks Cannafan and OUtraged! I have taken your advice and added another 1/2 of soil or so to bury the stem.

Next update is goodnews/badnews.

Goodnews: I'm going on a 7 day cruise

Badnews: You guessed it, I'm away from my girls for 7 days!!!

I have 'installed' a wick system for them to keep the soil nice and moist. I have 4 wicks running from 2 seperate water resevoirs. It kind of looks a bit cephalopodish, but all of the water is running through the wick.

My roommate may be able to check up on them as well, but I've heard never to trust anyone with the life of your plants except you. lol. I have the highest of hopes the plants will make it. If they do, I will begin the project of making my grow space - A 3x3x4 glass trophy case.

I hope everyone is preparing well for the HOlidays :) Stay warm and go get something delightful from Starbucks (or better yet, make your own :)

P.S. Sorry I didn't have pictures of my "AWAY' setup. I will take some when the plants are either dead or alive.:tommy: ::cheer:
