Re: Aberration Goes Ker Bloom! - 2009

Today the new bloom room got some paint. Only one coat and only half the room, but it makes such a difference. I need to go buy three more gallons to finish the job:

20110619Aber-01.jpg

20110619Aber-02.jpg

Remember the seeds I started soaking yesterday? 1 Tangerine Dream and 1 Qleaner. After about 32 hours of soak (arbitrary) I used a sterile kraft stick (popsicle stick) to carefully lift each out of it's cup. I then dropped an oasis cube into the soak and let it take up what it would until it was saturated. Then I drained the cup and placed the seeds (pointy end UP ;)) into the cubes and covered with a bit of cube material. They are about 1/4" down.

I placed these under jars misted with distilled water and put them about 4" from the floros. Lots of light this time. When they break surface I will remove the jars. Meanwhile they stay damp with distilled water.

By the way, the Qleaner had cracked already and a root had started outward:

20110619Aber-03.jpg

20110619Aber-04.jpg

Here's the Tangerine Dream. It was only floating because of the bubbles on the outside. When I gently knocked them loose it sank. Good seed:

Re: Aberration Goes Ker Bloom! - 2009

I hope so. I would prefer not to document all the ways you can fail at starting seeds. :) Thanks for the support, guys.

In ongoing business, BBX.2A (BigBud x BlueMagoo) and L.3A ('Lavender' indica) will wait until tomorrow night for harvest. They are done, but another day certainly won't hurt.

The two Grandaddy Purps plants that will follow them in bloom are GDP.1F & GDP.1K. GDP.1F is 18" tall and has three robust and equal tops. GDP.1K has a single top, Christmas tree style, and is about 20" tall. These are smaller than what I have been putting in for a while, but they will do. They will have to.

I have also found a solution for an ongoing issue. Right after transplanting some clones into their first pot, some transplantees would curl up and die. Maybe 1 in 10, but more with some strains and less with others. I put a couple such from my recent re-potting batch on the floor where it is dim, and sprayed them 2-3 times a day with plain distilled water. They are recovering. That was too easy. Now I recognize that as a form of wilt, though it doesn't have the same droop as a larger plant does when wilting.

Here's a 6" plant. It is starting to wilt. A larger plant would be more robust and would show a drooping of leaves all over before the top started to twist:

20110620Aber-01.jpg

A 2-3" fresh clone has fewer resources, is less well established and less robust. I suspect the difference in the way it curls may be due to different effect taking hold at a different timing influenced by scale and resources. In any case it's nice to finally figure out I can easily save those. I always just assumed they were toast. Here's one right after being misted the first time:

20110620Aber-02.jpg

See the connection? I finally do. And I now know that both are likely to recover now. Cool.

Re: Aberration Goes Ker Bloom! - 2009

Oh, I forgot to mention, that Afghani Hindu Kush looks like it's starting to grow. The leaves are larger and green and it looks like it's going to make it. Now I just need to nurse it along until it's big enough to take clones, so I can sex it.

I have every reason to be optimistic about the two new seeds. I am keeping them damp and humid, but not waterlogged.

Pictures of that soon.

Re: Aberration Goes Ker Bloom! - 2009

:Namaste:

Pictures first. It's all about the little ones tonight.

Here are the two seeds I'm sprouting, a Tangerine Dream and a Qleaner, right under the lights.

20110624Aber-01.jpg

This is how their little dome homes are constructed (demo'ed on a black stool so you can see better). First I put down a 3 oz plastic cup upside down.

20110624Aber-02.jpg

Then I punch three small holes in the bottom of another 3 oz cup. I mark the cup so I don't forget what it is. QLR is my shorthand for Qleaner.

20110624Aber-03.jpg

I put the Oasis cube in the cup with holes and set it on top of the other cup. I guess you could tape them together and punch the holes after, but I haven't bothered. They stay stacked if you are careful.

20110624Aber-04.jpg

The I spritzed the inside of a clean quart jar with distilled water and placed it over my little cup tower.

20110624Aber-05.jpg

Here's the Tangerine Dream. The jar is drying. My room is 73-77F and 31-40% humidity, 24/7. The jar will be fine for at least 12 hours that way on the table. The drain grooves in the table provide a small amount of ventilation. I need to clean it up.

20110624Aber-06.jpg

In this closeup, not only can you see the Tangerine Dream tip, but you can see that a small amount of moisture clings to the cup as well. The Oasis cubes don't go dry, nor do they ever get too saturated. It seems to work. The surface of the cube is about 4" below the floros.

20110624Aber-07.jpg

Finally, here is AHK. She's looking better.

Re: Aberration Goes Ker Bloom! - 2009

The small veg plants are looking a tinge yellow, so they get bumped up nutes.

Also, I ran out of the regular liquid steamed bone meal (0-10-0). so I substituted liquified fish bone meal (?-?-?). It's not preferred, but it will hold me over until I can get more of the regular stuff.

GDP.2M failed.

My Milwaukee T75 TDS meter packed up. Where the probe attached to the body the outside ring of the probe mating surface had sections broken off and water had been inside the probe. I calibrated the spare and put it into service. I need to get that on the to-buy list. I always keep a backup. It's probably time to replace the probe on the pH meter too. I have it up on the shelf. I just need to soak it.

Not much happening. I'm going to push the Saturday flush to Monday so that I have the minimum amount of work to do on the 4th. That way I can enjoy the holiday. I thought of doing a supplemental feed or even an extra day to dry, but they are all chugging along nicely and I don't want to mess with that. A flush is quick and easy.

The older Grandaddy Purps in bloom will go to the late-bloom recipe next time and I will need 6 buckets. But only for 2 feeds, and then the Matanuskans in there will go to the late bloom recipe and I can combine them again. ;)

Here's where I would normally flush, but instead I'm feeding so I can flush on the 4th (for convenience).

The new seeds worry me. The Tangerine Dream hasn't moved or changed appearance since the pic I posted. I think that may have been the root tip and it didn't turn soon enough. Perhaps I wasn't far enough down. I still have hope for the Qleaner as it has only been 7 days, but I worry. My seed-starting track record is pretty bad. I'm 1 for 7. Yeesh. I'm philosophical about it and not gutted. However it would be nice to figure out a good method for starting seeds that I won't screw up.

At least I have the one Afghani Hindu Kush that's actually doing well. She takes the mid food with the other small veg girls, so I added her to the roster as AHK:

Wow. That was 100 pages. I started this journal on May 16th, 2009 at 01:13 AM. It's been 2 years and change now that I have documented in spurts of pictures... and a continuous stream of boring feeding regimen. I have tried to include mostly what I do and the results. This should my 890th post in the thread as well, so I've talked to myself for stretches.

That seems like a long time.

Did anyone notice the thread title changed?

The two nearest harvest, GDP.1H and GDP.1J, will be ready in just over 2 weeks I am told. I'll be watching them to be sure, as this is my first Grandaddy Purps harvest.

That unsexed AHK (Afghani Hindu Kush) is really doing well. I may try to transplant it into deeper soil this weekend. I really should do some transplanting work with others as well. The population is booming again so I need to prioritize and thin to match again.

Here are some of the Grandaddy Purps, which went in at the same time as the Matty, but take about 10 days less. They are almost done:

The new Grandaddy Purps in bloom look like this at the moment:
