3rd Grow: Super Lemon Haze & Gold Leaf

Day 47 - Finally got around to putting metal stakes in to tie the really heavy branches up more vertical. The SLH that wasn't defoliated is most certainly the heaviest in part because of the extra large fan leaves.
As you can see the bud sizes are stacking really nicely. Much better than the previous grow
I'm holding 12inches of tape for size. These girls are already much bigger than the previous grow. Total height of the SLH is approximately 3.5 feet tall. Glad I have the tent height extension to accommodate the lighting and vents up top.
Not visible in these photos are the large quantity of pistils that are turning amber/brown.

Three and a half feet? I better be prepared when I grow one of those out!
Part of the reason these are so tall is that they were already fairly tall when I moved them from Veg into Flower light schedule. I would say they were between 15-18 inches. I'm also feeling this is also largely responsible for the large bud development. Very healthy plants from early on with the cloning. Defoliation a couple of times during Veg and plenty of recovery time before the flip.

I'm feeling a shift in my growing technique to include longer veg times. It should work well with the idea of flowering taking at least 8-10weeks from flip. If I drop new seeds or take clones a few days before I flip I will have a really long veg cycle and a hopefully a good set up for this type of performance.

This type of performance looks like it should really out perform the previous grow by a long shot.

Looks like a good plan. :thumb:

Longer veg usually results in a more complete root system, and a better, stronger, more extensive topside structure. Hence, much bigger, denser colas!
:yummy:
Yes, having an eight to ten week veg cycle while the flower tent girls are doing their thing is not a bad thing and makes the time go by nicely. It will also be interesting to see what happens with the Auto I'm currently growing with timing. I didn't use a root riot plug with it and it has really seemed to grow very well. Not sure if there was any connection, but it had the entire container to spread out in early on.

And that's a good thing, right?
Yes, and in the moment I'm leaning toward your anti defoliation beliefs also. Well perhaps some light shaping and trimming during Veg to assist with LST and manifolding.

#$^%$^%^&*&% - Damn It All - I have Thrips in the Flowering tent! Kill Kill Kill! Sprayed a heavy mist of the Spinosad spray I bought earlier for the UK Cheese.

I had kept looking but could never find one. Finally pinched off a fan that had a leave partially cut off. Turned over and saw one just has he was going over the edge toward the tops side.

Will take all of the plants out this evening when lights come back on and give a proper spray down and gently stroke the leaves upward with my moistened hand to make sure I get enough on the bottom of the leaves.

Earlier today when I found the Thrips in my tent, I was actually admiring the size of my colas. I'm going to step out on a limb here once again and say that it appears the size of the colas on the plants that were not defoliated are significantly larger than those on the other three plants.

The final call will be made after the dry weight comparison. Each pair are about the same size and have the same number of branches up from the main trunk so there should be no doubt as to the results if the weight is significantly different.

What's really interesting is the size of much lower buds that are shaded quite a bit by not only the large fans of their own plant, but the surrounding plants as well. I'm really pleased and feel this could really be some great first hand experience for me.

Maybe later this evening or in the morning. Need to pay attention to the pest issue. Priority A#1. However we all enjoy some Bud Porn. They are beautiful for sure. BTW, do Thrips get into the buds also and what happens to their dead bodies??

Nice bulky-looking cola tops! No skinny, pointy tips there! :yummy:

I think they will likely go wherever they can get what they need from the plant, including the sugar leaves. However, the trichomes and sticky resin are there for a reason. I haven’t seen any dead thrip bodies in buds from my plants that were infested, but thrips are very small. There may have been a few pops as they fried under the flame, but it didn’t affect the taste.

As Shed mentioned, a bud wash will ease your mind. If not done too vigorously, you shouldn’t see too many trichome heads knocked off.

We eat a lot of bugs, why not smoke them? I've been spraying my Blue Treacle auto #1 every morning with iso/water mix for thrips. I think they're not getting worse, which is the best I can hope for :).

Nice chunky colas on the GL, even the pistils are fat!
Do you spray with iso when they are flowering? I’ve heard it can dissolve trichs or something, so I’ve never considered it.

I have been, but it's 70% iso diluted 1:9 in water (per Van Stank) so it's a pretty mild solution. I've been spraying every morning for about a week now and everything looks okay on the buds I think.

Looks great to me too, I don’t see any melted trichs or whatever. I’ll try to remember iso if/when I get thrips, got to be better than most other “safe” sprays. I used insecticidal soap, last time, about 5 or so weeks from flowering and could taste it in the smoke (made great pain oil though).
