Here are a few pics of the tent during a cleaning..I dumped one of my bathroom fixtures for another DIY Hood and Lights. I know it looks like shit but it will do as a prototype! Grabbed a 6" x 24" duct tube from Home depot ( $3.47 ), 18 gauge stranded extension cord, Two standard ceramic sockets with 2 lead wires, and 4 six inch cork/hard board house plant coasters. I used the plant coasters for the fixture base and screwed them into the tube. The pics show it all. I placed 2 true 65 watt CFLs in there. I think I'm going to line the inside of the tube with mylar. I am going to order two 250 watt cfl's for her tomorrow. All of my babies are in the pics.

Does anyone know if I need a ballast for the small MH 100 watt bulbs? Found them in wally world last night. They fit standard sockets not a mogul.

oh wow really? I never knew MH bulbs come in standard medium socket. It should say something on the bulb box itself no? I'm assuming yes it needs some sort of ballast.

That's a wonderful piece of DIY spring, not shit at all - it's probably one of the most professional looking homemade reflectors I've seen. And great use of the cork coasters.
I think you will need a ballast, even for a 100w. Just did a quick Wiki search and apparently it's to do with the way the bulbs operate - if a normal constant voltage is applied the resistance drops and the current increases and the bulb essentially destroys itself. The ballast works to limit the current apparently, so if the current increases the ballast lowers the voltage to limit the current and prevent the bulb from going pop. At least that what it says on Wiki!

Ya, you will need a ballast for any MH/ HPS, I'm pretty sure. A simple Transformer, Capacitor, and Ignitor or a Magnetic Ballast would be cheaper than a digital for that size of light.

Couldn't you just daisy chain two 125 watt built in self-ballasted CFL bulbs?
like these 125 watt sunblasters?
Or would they be too long?
Seems like they'd work perfect in your "Kooltube" if they'd fit..
It's just that even if you could use those 100 watt MH bulbs daisy chained or not.
You'd have some pretty high temps.
Not allowing you to be as close as the rest of the lights= un even canopy..

i use the 200watters in my current system. but the vent pipe reflector ...WAY TO GO BROTHER. YOU JUST OPENED MY MIND TO ALOT OF IDEAS THERE. was going to use a sheet metal peace for a side reflector on a single t5 i got going but now i am thinking maybe the vent pipe at 1/3 would work better for me. but that setup i will definatly use for another growers space as i am helping him out with his clone room under compacts low budget diy is a fav.

I looked at it too. Seems you are right. I wonder if I can use an entire outdoor fixture. Like the kind from depot that are on the side of a house. The fixture looks crazy but I may be able to pull it apart and re-build to suit. Thanks for the comments...
