Too Old's Indoor Hempy Auto Fem Candy Cane - 2014

Update - Day 34 from sprout - Temps have all been good, even through this recent cold snap. Humidity is still tricky, but I've found that if I dump one litre of water into the tray and let the fans deal with it, I can keep it around 35%; a little low but better than it was.

Beautiful looking plant too old! :yummy:

I've read on the forums here to keep veging plants in an 50-70 RH environment and flowering at 40 to 50 RH

So wonder what else can be done to raise your RH a bit more?

But, I always went by how my plants were doing more so than what the articles say in the end :cheesygrinsmiley:

Colesdad - being true to my handle, I forget which plants I have turned and which way I turn them. So I put objects in the pot as a reference, ie, all objects on the south side today, north tomorrow. The smooth one is a banded agate from the driveway, the other "wrinkly" one is a moose tooth.

I do that same thing now thanks to you haha, (the stone thing i mean).

Looking bloody lovely man! really taking off now, and that colour aswell looks so healthy and nice. Still cant quite believe you can grow in just perlite lol. Would like to know your opinion on superthrive if you have one? You used it before atall? I use it sometimes but never quite known if it did anything.

Superthrive was developed in 1939. It is a plant vitamin and hormone supplement that is supposed to enhance plant growth and vigor.

Does it? Your guess is just as good as everyone else's. The bottle says "Guaranteed Results". But how would you measure success between two different plants?

My opinion: I like 'snake oil' products. I believe that those old farts actually knew what they were doing, even if they didn't know how it worked.

Yes, I use it. I give the girls two drops in every litre of nutes, on every second day; and a third drop the day before a topping or a pruning, just to give them a boost (it's also suppose to help relieve stress).

It's cheap, easy to use, lasts forever, and it makes me feel good even if it doesn't do anything for the plants.

Hey Catman - Sorry somehow missed your post. Thanks for the compliment. As to the humidity? A humidifier may work, but I'm thinking that somewhere in AZ, NM, or NV a pot plant is surviving at 10% humidity, so my average is probably ok. They don't seem to be suffering, so just gonna go with the flow. I know from past grows that come summer time I will definitely be starting up the de-humidifier.

Makes sense to me! :cheesygrinsmiley: I had a battle with humidity over here and I'm glad it's all over now

Went out tonight to feed and check on the girls and I couldn't get in. The wind has been blowing so hard, that the drifting snow filled every crack and space in the door frame. Then the heat and humidity from inside combined to make an almost impenetrable ice formation. Finally had to beat around the edges of the door with a 12 pound sledge to crack the ice, then had to work the door in and out to shatter it enough to open it. I thought a winter grow was going to be easy. Stupid me!

So when I was mixing up the nutes, I got to thinking about the N-P-K numbers and how they relate to what I'm actually feeding them. I know these numbers are supposed to represent the amount of available nutrients per volume of water. I am assuming that these ratios are correct when using the manufacturer's suggested rates of application. However, if I make my own combinations, will the ratios be altered and can I use the N-P-K numbers to figure out the strength that I am using? For instance, if nute company G says to use 1ml per litre of water of 0-5-4, and I use 2ml per litre, do I end up with 0-10-8? And, if the recommended dose is say 1ml per litre of water of each, 0-5-4 and 4-2-5 and 2-1-6, does this mean that in the final mixture I end up with 6-8-15? Sure hope I'm making sense here, cause my brain is starting to hurt. Anyone?

Hiya too old. Your battle with ol man winter sounds similar to our icy conditions here right now but I can't say I've ever had to take a 12-lb hammer to a door - more hammer man! hehe
My understanding:
what you summarized is exactly correct - with the miniscule exception that you are adding the extra mils to the liter...not a big deal just scientifically saying since you now theoretically have 1003 ml. When you have the same constant volume, in this case your 1 liter, that you are adding concentrates too, then every adddition increases the ppm concentration of the original liter with the final result including every ppm that you added.
This would be different however if you mixed three whole liters at the three different concentrations you stated; in which case you would divide your 6-8-15 by 3 to give you 3 liters at 2-2.6-5 because you're diluting at that point not increasing the concentration. This only applies as long as you are using the same volumes i.e. 1 ml of concentrates to 1L of water or the liter to liter to liter model. Once you start combining 1L to 2.5L to 0.5L of different concentrations then the algebra gets more complicated.

Thank you, C. That's kind of what I figured (I neglected the increase in volume, ie, 1003ml, as this isn't really science). I had "thunk" myself into a loop, and the more I thought about it, the more looped I got. But thanks for confirming that, it will help when I start to customize the nute schedule.

By the way, the door didn't get hurt. I have a tendency to use overkill when I build things.

You are most welcome too old. I still get looped too when thinking through the concentration scheme. Now that I'm up in my 40s I realize I need more thought clouds extending from my head to work through my thoughts...it's like with age I get more RAM but slower processor speed lol. I am thankful no doors were hurt in your forced entry :) I build the same way, it's either piano quality or none. Have a great danky Thursday and Cheers

:high-five:

Hey Too old, I got two of those double big gulp cups I was telling you about, filled em' with coco/perlite and Im waiting for my clones to root. should know in 4 or so days if they make it.
But I'll be growing CSSH in those cups, so everyone can see em'.

That's great, jinn. I'll stop in for a look to check things out. I haven't had a chance to get into town to have a look for myself, so this will help.

A little off topic, but it's my journal: after re-organizing the grow room, I ended up with a bunch of extra table space. (I took a light hood out, moved it into the spare room in the house for another experiment, moved the bubbler back into the house as well.) What to do with all that space? How about a worm bin? Sure I says. So I ordered 300 or so worms today. Should be here by Wednesday or Thursday next week. The way I figured it, I could spend $100 on worm farming and go broke, or spend $100 at the casino. Worms won. Who knows, maybe by the summer, I'll supply our grow shops with castings.

Even further off-topic, but it's still my journal: Sheriff walks into the saloon. Says, "Listen up boys. Any of you hombres seen Brown Paper Jake?" Feller at the end of the bar says, "What's he look like?" Sheriff says, "He's got himself a brown paper hat, a brown paper shirt, brown paper pants, and brown paper boots." Feller says, "Nope. I ain't seen him. What's he wanted for?" Sheriff says, "Rustlin'."

My son and his wife grow worms in their spare room. Really interesting to look at. He gave me some worm casting tea...but I didn't know what was in it or how to dilute it, what have you, so I didn't use it at the time. Depending on "circumstances" I'd be really interested in starting something like that [circumstances being money].

Update - Day 41 from sprout: Boooooring. Plants are just growing. Nothing happened. Oh wait, I trimmed some huge fan leaves off so the side branches from the first two nodes can actually get some light. Maybe I shouldn't whine, I guess this is better than finding rats chewing on them. Oh yeah, I also boosted the nute solution (thanks colorfuldayze), no adverse effects so far. I am not sure if these are actually autos or not. They grow like photos. It's seven weeks from go, and they are doing well, but not what I had been led to believe. This strain at least would not be a very good cash crop (if you were so intentioned). With a photo, I would be one week away from the flip to 12/12, and these plants are nowhere near that. I'm thinking I'll start two more plants (different strain), because if these still have another 10 - 12 weeks minimum, then I'll be waiting until the end of summer for a second crop. Anyway, here's the pics. ( I seem to have forgotten to take one aspect of one plant, hence only three pics. I'll get the fourth tomorrow when I feed them.) Thanks for stopping in and listening to me bitch. Hope all is green in your world.

Nice update too old. Wow, they have doubled in size and stature in 6 days since your last pics and are looking great! I never even dreamed that one could grow in all perlite (where have I been?) that is just too kewl. What did you change/do to 'boost' your nutrient solution? Glad like heck there are no adverse effects so far - noting that I only explained the concentration concept and not a nutrient change recommendation :)
On my auto strain, the first onset of flowers (for both females and males) occurs simultaneously like clockwork when the nodes change from symmetrical to indeterminate - which is also the sign that the plant is mature. My strain usually goes indeterminate at the 13th vertical base node. All of your nodes look like they are still symmetrical. It will be interesting to see when you get flowers :) Waiting anxiously for you and am likewise thankful no ratz chewed your plants. Great job too old and thanks for sharing. Cheers

:blunt:

Hey too old! Your plant looks fabulous - Happy and green growing! Boring is good at this point IMO. I guess you never know with autos what their gonna do - especially between strains and even with the same strain. I guess she'll flower when she's good and ready, seeing as she's healthy and all. Probably have a growth spurt when she flowers too.

I have no idea about any other grow medium aside from soil [don't know too much about that either really...] Glad colorfuldayze was here to answer all those nute questions...

Fingers crossed for flowers soon!
