Yes, You need luck, a good strain or phenotype and veg it to a foot high. Then wait. It's easy

if ricos plant was put in the ground early in flower I promise you it would be a whole lot bigger,
same with a 5 gal bucket/ 10 gal bag.
the pot its in is pretty small actually, this plant is big for his indoor grow sure. but outdoor plants in ground are monsters.
I have seen a couple journals like this, none in flower yet but the plants on one guys journal look like its going to be 3-4 pounds (last season he said he pulled a 3 pounder.)
and also big irish dude has a GDP plant he started seed on 12/26/12 and its ALMOST NOW ready for harvest, its HUGE !

sorry I cant say I have pulled one that big myself not even a pounder, but I have come a long way as well.
with the experience I have, its a matter of time.

Hey listen, Lego. I am happy enough with my plant.
Of course plants that are in the ground get bigger.
Other people grow much better and bigger plants all the time.
But don't believe every "Weight" you read on a grow diary.
There's a big difference between 3 and 4 pounds of weed!
A weeks worth of drying can do that! Lol.
And please link to stuff you are referring to.
Otherwise you're just going
