Hyena's Never-Ending Adventures In Growing

Highya H.M.,

A beautiful sight is the canopy and colas in the oldest tent. En masse they look so good. You have to be proud of your college girls. Cheers

Here's a random

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Be careful what you wish for.

Now that all my hard work has produced a near-automatic grow house, I have to say being able to go there only once a week is mission accomplished...yet I wish I could have more contact with my girls. I'm finding out that interacting with pot plants on a regular basis is something I really need, and doing it on a daily or near-daily basis is something I really miss. What a quandary...I dreamed for years of a once-a-week pot farming venture and now that it's real I walk around for the other six days wishing I had some little green friends to tend.

Maybe a little of this is post-Las Vegas syndrome. Doing nothing but hard-core partying for 4 days with a hot woman and no rules isn't something you just come back from and forget in twenty minutes. We had a total blast and it went until 3 am every night. I will turn 60 in a few months so I'm no spring chicken but I still find that magical place makes you feel, and act, 20 years younger. We took a 4-mile hike in Red Rocks canyon that was literally prehistoric, so intensely beautiful it must be seen to be believed...and hiked many more miles on the Las Vegas Strip observing the other varied and even prehistoric forms of life that inhabit that crazy place.

I smoked so much weed it would be simpler to count the breaks from smoking because there weren't many. Weed is legal there but you never know where "legal" still means "but not right here"...well, it's legal there and I smoked EVERYWHERE, including the hotel, walking around, even sitting at a couple casino bars, and nobody said shit. I'm a big muscular guy with very red eyes so maybe that's part of it but everyone left me alone and a fair number said hey bro I'll take a hit...and I was glad to share. For most of the trip I was sooooo high it was fantastic, though combining that with all-day drinking occasionally had even ME reaching a temporary limit...

The funniest part is, there are cannabis billboards and cannabis flyers and every other kind of cannabis advertising, literally everywhere. There are dispensaries aplenty, and they even sponsor local stuff so for example the slick elevated train that runs all through Las Vegas is entirely covered with one huge ad that says, POWERED BY FLOWERS. Imagine that plastered on the entire 100-foot length of a freaking train and you see it go by about ten times a day no matter where you go. There are even billboard trucks that drive around constantly, up and down the strip, most advertise hookers and shows but some for cannabis, too. It's totally cool to be in the world where cannabis is a regular thing. BUT...

With all that focus on weed, weed, weed...I brought my own weed to Vegas.

And it was better.

I have had weed delivered to me many times previously in LV heck you just call someone on Craigslist and ten minutes later they pull up in the parking lot of your hotel and here's your quarter. Almost always the commercial favorites, a lot of GG out there and Cookies plus various OGs but my latest crop puts all that in its place because it kicks my ASS. The Super Bud in particular is absolutely as stony as Mount Rushmore, yet it's not the devastating body crush so I was able to hike and party and function all day while being hammer stoned most of the time. Which I like. Not knocking all the nice dispensary herb available but most of it wouldn't overly impress anyone reading my journal...the very best buds I saw in the biggest dispensary I have ever been in were still nowhere near the furry, carefully-selected gems I brought out there with me. I smoked fatty after fresh, fragrant fatty.

The only thing we didn't get to was joining the Area 51 raid. I wonder what we would have found if we DID get in...

Who knows. See you next year, Las Vegas. Back to reality...have a gr8 weekend!

Peace, Hyena

Highya HM,

Great expose on Vegas. A lot different than the Chevy Chase Vacation movies, lol. You had to have a great time! Sounds so delightful! I spent 6 months in Reno, and it was nothing like that (part of my working years). Cannabis wasn't legal then either. Oh, well.
Yeah, you could grow a couple ladies at home somewhere, just so you won't be so canna lonley. Maybe you need another project. Who knows. Cheers

Yes it's true, I pine for my girls especially when I have a fragrant room in full bloom. I really enjoyed popping in there for just a minute or two almost every day when I had full runs in the attic lab, just to smell them and see the crystal magic.

I can live with just tending some babies here at home. Sprouting the next run as we speak.

WOW...FINALLY...! Another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

Well, I stayed away a full eight days. Longer than ever before. I figured I would try it since wifey and I were going to the Far Northern Command in Northern Michigan for the weekend and it didn't make sense to drive up then drive up again a day later. I was worried, I won't lie...I prayed for guidance...

Thanks for the guidance. It worked. :lot-o-toke:

But before I could leave Thursday afternoon, I had to transplant the new babies for Run #4.

It always surprises me how dicey it is to try to get 12 healthy seedlings from seeds, all within 3-4 days of each other. With my setup it makes no sense to run less than 12 plants, and this time around I had to use 20 seeds to get the magic number of 12. The seeds were all from Run #1, all but 2 a self-cross of a Big Bud plant, and the other 2 a cross between Big Bud and White Widow. The former came from the most productive of the 4 Big Bud phenos, and who wouldn't be excited about the latter? But even though the seeds were all as fresh as it gets, some didn't sprout fast enough, and some didn't even sprout.

But most did.

And just in the nick of time, I had enough to fill 12 pots.

After some work I had them all in and the water tubes all adjusted just right...

And the next run is growing!

So then we drove up to the GH. We got there late so it actually worked out to nine days by Friday morning when I cracked the tents and took a look. I knew this was really, really pushing the limits of the 55-gallon-max capacity of tent #1, and when I looked in the barrel sure enough there was less than ten gallons in there. Maybe five! The plants looked a little less energetic than they could have but no apparent damage done, and everything looked better early Friday morning after a couple flood cycles. They probably had pretty much no water for several days at least. How did they make it? The super-absorbancy of the gallon or so of Perlite that forms the center of the root ball is life insurance, compared to using all-Hydroton clay balls. It's like a sponge in the middle, holding precious water to get them past a few dry days...which they probably just experienced. Why I use it. Ahhh, tricks.

So, in Tent #1 they look like this...

I scrogged a bit and they can keep spreading out...I plan to let this grow go a bit further in veg than the previous two, since these grows aren't stretching like the Sativa plants I have always been used to. In fact some are staying annoyingly stout. Soooo, I think I'll give a few extra weeks to this one and see if I can get bigger plants.

Our timing was such that we had to leave early so we headed up to the far Northern house. We had a great three days hanging out and getting it all ready for snowy Winter (and hopefully a lot of snowmobiling!). Then on Sunday on the way home we stopped back in at the Grow House.

Here's what Run #2 looks like, in all her glory:

Yes, it's awesome. I honestly can't believe how juicy and sweet it smells in here, no words can describe the incredibly wonderful aroma of all this Grade-A Primo weed.

Everything looks fine, no issues with temperature at this time of year so perfect mid-60s to low 70s and everybody seems like they like it. The buds on everything are hard as rocks, I've never ever had buds this rocky before and maybe it's the addition of the Terpinator and Bloom Booster.

Here's a few examples:

White Widow is some frosty shit...

The Super Bud looks, well, super...

And there's two different Blueberry phenos...both awesomely fragrant but the dark purplish one with really wide buds is especially enticing...

I have no idea how I got this insane stand of buds. I'm not this good. I stood silently before it, experiencing the magnificent moment of fruition...of all the work, all the miles, all the time and yes...all the love. The moment you know it is done...and you have done it. So long awaited and so hoped for that it takes time to set in, to fully realize that Christmas has finally come. Ho Ho Ho!!

It is like some sort of primeval forest...

Never know who you'll see in one of those. And these guys better find new digs because it's all about to get chopped, baby!!

I have sampled the three buds I cut a week ago. Everything is absolutely great. So now the time has come and I'm planning to go back Wednesday to examine samples under the microscope. If we have any ambers I will be chopping half the plants, the six tallest, and hanging them to dry in large pieces with no trimming. The other six can go another week. I need to break the harvest process into two, two-day sessions instead of four days with no breaks. That was brutal. So my thought is maybe cut half, then a week later trim that half and cut/hang the other half, then trim the final lot up the following week. It shouldn't hurt anything to break up these operations into two parts and maybe even allow me to grow some longer-maturing varieties in the future and do one 8-week and one 9- or 10-week variety, staggering the harvests. It would open up my options beyond the 8-week limit I have now. Hmmmmm.

I have been watching videos and reading discussions and I'm wondering if drying the plants in larger, untrimmed chunks then dry trimming will make for even better nugs. Trimming dry makes for a more intense smell for sure compared to doing it all wet, and maybe the buds will dry a little tighter, at least that's what they say so I'll probably try it this time around.

So the trip might be pretty fast Wednesday, I might just hack, hang, and come home, giving them a week to dry naturally. Whatever happens, I'll tell you all about it!

I have been driving so much for this Grow House I think they might rename I-75...

Seriously.

Peace, Hyena

Excellent news! I was beginning to wonder if something was up, but glad all is well in the Hyena House.

With the denser buds, don't forget you turned your lights up too, which probably helped as well. :D

Have you considered a TrimPro?

Maybe after a few runs under your belt to recoup some of the funds would afford you the opportunity. The TrimPro Trimbox & Workstation ($1075) looks like it would suit you well. (Or a DIY version for a lot less if you're so apt.)

I'm considering it. Have you used the Trimpro? My concern is minimizing bud damage and loss of both mass and trichomes. But if I could automate trimming with those factors addressed I would be all in.

I haven't used one myself, no. However, you're in control of what gets trimmed. I'm not talking about the toss 'em in and let 'em go model, but the one that's a big fan and you just run sticks over it and trim off what you want. Almost like shaving.

So I don't think it would be that bad from all the vids I've watched. Looked pretty good to me. If you don't put it below the screen, it won't get chopped. :D

It would certainly decrease your trim time though. Once you get the hang of it, it might even cut it in half.

“Beautiful, Big-Budded plants like these don’t just fall out of the sky, you know?!”

Don't I know it brother. A lot more work than people could even imagine goes into every bag of nugs. I never imagined it until I did it, that's for sure!

Thanks for being there!

Peace, Hyena

Damn there is some greatness all over that flick. Rickman as Metatron was awesome. Such a phenomenal talent.

Okay, I spent some time watching videos of Trimpro workstation and multiple other machines...some random thoughts...

-Trimpro needs someone who appears to have even the most basic understanding of trimming pot before they shoot a video of their product...the disembodied hand that demonstrated "how to use Trimpro" took a fresh branch, with the large (and easily removed) fan leaves still awkwardly attached, and began grinding it on the grate like a monkey would. Please tell me NOBODY is seriously trimming a nice cola like that, just smashing it back and forth almost as if they were trying to remove every possible trichome while accomplishing a basic, rather loose trim result that I could have done much better, in half the time, with scissors.

Trimpro should know nobody wants to mix chopped fan leaf with actual bud trim, unless you're a hobbyist and you're stupid. Yet their other videos also proudly featured their other machines, and more people demonstrating how to butcher nice buds into stuff that nobody would be proud of. Whether the by-hand rubbing on the grate method, or the silicone fingers rubbing the buds against the grate in the motorized bin-style models, I imagine half the trichomes come off even doing it wet. And the resulting trim result isn't that tight so if there's no advantage except speed and the product quality isn't as good as hand-trimmed, I don't see their machines being the choice for me.

BUT,

Dry trimming seems to remove even more of the trichomes by any automated method I have looked at...yikes!

First, they are ALL super expensive. For the simplicity and commonality of the technology I really don't see it...I believe the real common thread between companies that sell bud trimming machinery is they are all taking full advantage of the easy money they can extract from people for their overpriced tech.

With that said, the two styles of dry-nug trimmers, cylindrical and flat, both shave the hell out of nugs and both styles remove far more material than I'm comfortable with. In fact, I can't believe how many trimming machine videos actually showed how rough, inconsistent, and inefficient they really are. Setting aside the fact that many are just unedited amateur video which seriously impedes conveying the product features and benefits, the actual demonstrations showed how hit or miss the process is when it's mechanized. Some nugs get butchered and some leave too much leaf, many have to still be recycled back through multiple times to get the desired result,

I can vary the depth of my hand trim and achieve a far better result with far less waste. The only tradeoff is time.
So, with an average of 4 pounds of product per harvest, is it worth 4 days to do it myself? Maybe. Is the highest quality bud with maximum trichome preservation worth the effort? For now.

Looking at the world of rosin presses to explore a trim outlet that might change the equation. Hmmmmm...

Oh, definitely. It's all in the skill of the user for sure. There are also the "hand trimmers". The bowl with the crank. They work, but still run into the same problem. And those you have to cut your buds off the branch first, so that leaves drying up to a hanging net.

The difference between hand trimmed and machine trimmed is like the difference between going to Safeway to get their bread, versus going to an artisanal bakery and getting theirs.
Safeway-cheap, always in stock, bland and ordinary
Bakery-more expensive, in demand because of the quality and appearance, keeps more flavor and signs of the intended profile.
It may take longer, but in my humble opinion, it has more value and higher quality.
Just my two cents:)
Yuck...

Now that’s what I’m talking about...best of the best, just like your weed brother:)

WOW...I never saw a loaf of bread with a hairdo! And I think you're right my friend. Hand trimming until further notice!

And about to chop!

Oh, Lord, not another

HYENA'S GROW HOUSE update!

I went up Wednesday as planned, ready to chop Run #2!

But first, I had to meet a heating and air guy to light my furnace. The pilot light was out and I don't know why, but no heat is not feasible because it's getting down in the high 30s at night now. Since I just bought the place in April, I know the furnace was tested and worked fine then. I'm not incompetent but I couldn't light that damn pilot light to save my ass! After multiple humiliating tries to do something any heating and air guy could do, I gave in and called one.

After three hours of driving, of course I'm waiting three more hours for him to show up. He finally did, an unlit cigarette dangling from his mouth the entire time, t-shirt, fat belly, butt crack and all. With experience like that written all over him, I instantly knew this fellow would solve my problem in five minutes.

And that's exactly what he did. He lit the furnace immediately doing exactly what I had done. Grrrr. Sixty-five bucks for that. But rather than get annoyed, I just smiled. My build is a complete success. This guy has no idea he is less than four feet away from a literal forest of fat, stinky cannabis. Not a molecule of odor. Not a whisper from a fan. I chatted with him for another ten minutes, standing right in the hallway of my little grow house, then bid him adieu...if only he knew what was happening literally all around him, he would crap those stylish pants. Because I GUARANTEE this guy smokes weed. :ganjamon:

So he's gone and now it's 4 o'clock, and the plants have gone dark again, and the time has come. If I'm going to slaughter the hog it's going to be right now. I sat down for a pre-killing-spree joint and thought about it one more time...and thought about it again...

Before the heating guy came over I had snipped the tiny end off four different buds. I examined each of them with the microscope. Three of the four samples showed some cloudy trichomes and just a few ambers. Perfect ripeness if you ask me. The fourth was all clear trichs but the buds look pretty sweet and juicy. So I know the thing is ready. But I still hesitated. Surely another 4-5 days won't ruin things, right? I mean, it won't all just go amber and the dope is bad over night, right? I have always notoriously chopped a bit too early, IMHO. I never let stuff go until it's got monster one-pound buds or anything, I'm not sure if it even would, I'm always cautious to take stuff down earlier because I like the more uplifting buzz better.

But this is mostly Indica and maybe I should give it that last opportunity to add a little more bulk. I looked at the pictures again and decided why not...I drove home, leaving the first chop to probably Monday or maybe Tuesday.

Here are the pictures...this was hard to leave standing...

The colors and aromas blend into an almost psychedelic soup for the senses...I put on a glove when I took these and pinched about ten colas, then just breathed the perfumed air for awhile, eyes closed, just delighting in the power of the fragrance. Ahhhhh...heaven on Earth. You only get this for a week or two at the very end of a grow and isn't it just the absolute best thing in the world??

I think so.

Tell me you can almost smell these buds...

Oh, to live on...Sugar Mountain...

I will never, ever get tired of this no matter how many times I am blessed to do it.

And that will be more times because here's Run #3 looking like it is going to be a big deal too...

Everybody looks great and the removal of over 150 leaves didn't make a dent.

It's a sea of beautiful green...

But I'm going to let this one grow a lot more. How high will it go? The mostly-Indica stuff I'm growing now isn't towering over me like my Hyena Sativas always did...so can I get these to grow taller? We'll see.

So I pussed out on chopping, and Monday I run back up and chop chop chop for sure. I've decided to try drying the plants in large chunks, only removing the big fan leaves but leaving everything else alone, then in a week semi-dry trimming them. Because I want to break up the fun into two sessions of a couple days each, I plan to leave some plants standing for the extra week which will stagger the harvest and not pile up too much work at once (like last time).

Peace, Hyena
