Bassman's Master Kush - Blue Planet Nutes - Grow Stealth LED Grow #3

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

yes the advice I got on bleach was 2 drops per gallon. This was givin to me by a 20+ yr grower running 70K worth of lights in RDWC spread over three locations.

With those qualifications, I believe him.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

I am SUPER glad to hear that AK1. Now go to the cause of it and handle it. We learn and adjust and this plant still rewards us.

Edit: For the actual treatment of root rot using h202, I suggest you go back into my 1st grow thread and find the measurement info I got from Advanced Nutrients folks. I don't recall the amounts, but basically it was a large amount of h202 added to straight RO water for like 6 hours or something. Then flushed out and refill with nutrient and hygrozyme (I think some h202 too but can't recall). It totally saved my grow.

This was my first grow and was in DWC bubbler buckets. The tent gets HOT no matter what I do. I have now switched to the flo n gro system and no issues with res temps. I am more then sure my RR was due to higher then wanted bucket temps. After this grow is finished I'm DONE with bubbler buckets. Too much damn work and hard to control the temps all the time.

I'm only passing on what was so freely passed on to me here at 420mag.

Thanks a bunch AK1

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Update:

Day 27 in veg from seedling;

Busy day today. Made up 16 gals of nutrient. Setup at about 900 ppm (.5 conversion). Bought a 4 foot T5 4 bulb 6500k light at the hydro store. Moved the Master Kush girls to another closet where I could setup more even lighting.

You can see by the pics two are shorter than the other two. This is because the cfl veg in the other closet couldnt cover them properly. I expect really good results from fixing that.

I noticed too that my fim's last week were actually "fuck I missed". I missed the fim. Too tired right now but I'll take a closer look and either top or fim in the next 24 hours.

As a result of moving the girls you'll notice 2 buckets are in 1 waterbath tub. This was another bonus from moving them as I can add ice jugs to the bath instead of ice bags. I noticed the roots of 2 had a couple small spots of rot. Really small. I wont worry about it. I have the water temps cooler now, added Hygrozyme, also added Fox Farms Bush Doctor root activator. This is a root enhancer with 4 types of glomus which according to Corey of Blue Planet Nutrients is something we want through veg and the first two weeks or so of flower to make the roots happy and have better uptake.

I may treat them to a dosing of h202 as well. Just to be sure on the couple of brownish spots on the roots of the two mentioned.

Nothing to fret over.

Later tonight or tomorrow I may switch to GLR (Gas Lantern Routine) too. I picked up an analog timer just for that reason today. I need to go back and read up again on that topic.

As far as defoliation, you can see they are bouncing back nicely. No worries there. But I need to get that topping done and start bending them.

Any suggestions on how high above the girls the T5 should be?

your grows looking nice. i'm interested in watching that plant you trimmed grow, i been reading up on that and heard some good stuff on that. once i get my grow going agin i will be experimineting with that as well. good grow so far

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

HollowStump, Welcome to my Journal and welcome to :420:. All 4 of them were trimmed back hard already. The one you see above that's trimmed was defoliated a few days after the others because its main stalk had a weak spot so I gave it a couple extra days before snipping off leaves.

I just plugged in the new timer for GLR. Twelve hours on, 5.5 hrs off, 1 hour on, 5.5 hrs off.

I haven't decided for sure yet. But I'm thinking about maybe putting these into flower when I take down my present harvest rather than putting the two AK48 mom's into flower and letting these veg out more. It may depend on where these Master Kush girls are at when I harvest and clean out tent. We'll see.

Edit: Pic Two shows the girl on the right has a bit of a Mag deficiency. I'll check the PH and make sure it's within range of preventing mag lockout.

Just a fyi AK, but you know, with a chiller, it becomes RDWC and it's easy as pie. You never have to worry about temps and you really can narrow down the variables to minimal effort.

Add a main res, PH main res only, adjust, done.
Weekly bi weekly water change, just pump out from your recirc, refill through main res. Done.

Daily nute/water adds, check main res, add accordingly. Done.

It is ez.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Update:

Day 28 in veg.

Well roughly 28 days in veg. I forgot to mark my calendar when exactly I moved them to the buckets.

It's been 8 days now with 216w of T5 (4 bulbs 4 foot long). They love this more than the cfl's that for sure. Growth is good. Everything is healthy.

I've done some topping & fimming. The topped one has two nice leaders. The fimmed girls are slow to show. We'll see.

I took some leaves off the one on the right the other day. And the one next to her is now starting really veg up after her defoliation about 5 days ago. The first one in the 2nd pic is the topped girl and doing great. I'll defoliate her and bend as needed in a couple days too.

I am about 90% on making a change to this grow. A big one at that. I had to send off my LED to be repaired/replaced. A bank of lights went out and when I replaced the ballast sent by grow stealth it didnt fix it. So since I am without, I am thinking about putting in 600-1000w of HPS for this grow.

I would like to see what kind of results I get using this hi defoliation technique under hps anyways. I wasn't planning on doing it this grow. But I kind of need to harvest this in a certain time frame and knowing a replacement LED (or repaired) is a ways off it throws my timing off a bunch.

There are issues for me however with HPS.
1. Heat! I am renting this house and cannot go putting holes in shit to exhaust hot air. I am wondering about running a 500cfm or so intake fan through a light, with a exhaust fan sucking it out, then routing the duct work out the door of the bedroom the tent is in. And just let it blow into the hallway. I also think it would be a good time to add a can for smell.

2. Electricity. I live in the desert. It gets hot and stays hot from May-Oct. AC is on 24/7 practically during those months. HPS would mean more AC and more $$ on an already $300+ per month elect bill in summer. Easily over $100 more per month.

3. Noise? I don't know if this is an issue or not. I'm talking about the additional whur from adding a fan to cool the light.

4. Safety. Because I take care of elderly mom, and grow room is upstairs, which she can not navigate. I worry about safety/fire issues when I am at work. I basically am gone from 1am to noon, at work. I haven't worked out location of a ballast yet, but I understand they can get hot?

Any advice would be wonderful.

So, do I got 600w or 1000w? Whichever it is I need it to cover 4'x4' REALLY WELL. At 600w it's 38 watts per sq ft coverage. At 1000w it's 62w per sq ft. Pretty big difference. But is it worth it in terms of heat, electricity, and grams per watt results for this hi defoliation technique, to go 1k watts.

I tend to think 1k watts would be best so they get the deepest penetration possible. It's at this point my ass hurts from the reaming I'll take in electricity not only to run the system but to cool it too. Add to that, 1k = 8-10 amps and it's a 15 amp breaker in the room, running an air pump, chiller, couple fans, recirc water pump. I'll do the math later, but I dont want to be too close to the limit and start heating up house wiring.

ok, now what brand hps bulb and what brand ballast?

I lean towards digilux bulb and lumatek ballast. I will not go magnetic. So I'm looking for thoughts & suggestions on this.

Here's todays pics:

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Hmmm. 600w seems like it would cover a 4x4 pretty well, and 1000w sounds like too much of a heat challenge given all your other conditions. I would say go 600w personally. You might be okay doing what you suggest with venting. The key is that your cool air intake vents aren't pulling from air that's been heated by your exhaust. Heat may be an issue for you, so make sure you can return what you buy in case you see temps go through the roof. Not an issue if you are certain that your intake air won't be polluted by the exhaust air heat. But, sounds a little grey area to me perhaps? They DO run hot.

The fan will make some more, mostly ambient white noise/hum/whir.

Just make sure the ballast, which does get warm, isn't near anything flammable and that you're not over working your electrical circuit. I've had Lumatek, now I have Quantum and Galaxy ballasts. All seem about the same, but the Quantum is fan-cooled. I did have a 1 year old Lumatek blow once and make a hell of a scary smokey smelly cloud before it tripped it's circuit breaker. I'm personally done with Lumatek, but it might have been a fluke. They were good about the warranty.

I'd look at the ballasts by the new site sponsor, JDL lighting. It's been getting good reviews, and the price looks good, too. Just a few thoughts.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Hey Bass! Well your looking at the problems we all work against. I'm running a 400 watt HPS in a 34" x 34" area and I can exhaust to the outside. I am still going to quit in May so as not to fight the heat. When you start battling heat created by your lights with AC your in the catch 22 purgatory. I would go the 600 watt light. I would also cut a hole in the house to vent the heat outside or into the attic via cooltube. This would be the only way using a 1000 watt bulb. Just do it so it is easy to put back like it was before. Defoliation makes lower watt lights more effective making penetration easier. Venting the heat out into the hallway where the thermostat is usually put will really make that elect bill large. I guess I am old school as I use and like magnetic ballasts. Best possible scenario move to the mountains, say at least to 6000 feet and enjoy cool all year! It is easier to heat than cool.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

If you're worried about a fire they sell portable ceiling mountable sprinklers. Its basically a pressurized can that has a sprinkler head on it. Off the top of my head I know monster gardens has them. I plan on getting one.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Thanks for the thoughts and advice guys.

The thermostat is downstairs so it would be heating the upstairs and my bedroom mostly.

A couple thoughts came to mind.

1. duct directly from ac vent in the bedroom the tent is in to the tent. Coolest intake possible except when ac unit is cycled off, then it's hot air from the system, within the attic.

2. Exhaust along ceiling to the crawl space hatch in hallway? It's long, probably 15 feet of ducting to exhaust, but could have a new hatch cut with a hole in it and use that.

Man if I ever have another AC problem, the stealth is gone. Landlord never comes over. But they are so conservative, even with a permit it would be a huge problem.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

I'm pretty dang conservative. The further you get from the Constitution the more liberal you are. In fact Ron Paul the most conservative guy running would legalize pot. If I owned the house I would have to take the position that would keep it from being seized also. So Stealth is your only option, if summers heat compromizes that then think outside the box and do something differently. Maybe an outside grow, storm shelter, small mobile home. I have even seen some really good T5 HO grows. Anyone who can buck the wild ride of DWC can fix his own AC, or overcome virtually any challenge.

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Just a thought, but the Digital Greenhouse ballast at HTG supply has had a great number of good reviews also. I did a lot of reading before I purchased mine. It is a 600 watt digital, DIMABLE, and switchable (runs HPS and MH bulbs)
It was around $230.00 complete with cord and socket, reflector and ballast, 5 year waranty(3 year full and 2 year pro rated)
I'm pleased as can be with mine, although I've only had it a month.
I would think you could go with a 1k dimable, wich the have as well. They have the 100%, 75% and 50% setting.....Or you could try the 600.
The Eye Hortilux bulbs get high praise too....
Plants look great btw!

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Bassman- Just wanted to thank you, as it was your first two journals that led me to the 420 forums and to DWC... I was only looking at LED grows (you were high on google, BTW), but found you and this great community.

Also, I hope all is well on the homefront and I'm glad you were able to work through the housing issues in such a tough time.

oh, and a P.S. Woah! Mr. Defoliation! I think I may experiment with my grow, defoliate half of a plant, a whole plant and none of a plant... Thanks!

Re: Bassmans Master Kush, Blue Planet Nutes, GrowStealthLED Grow #3

Thank you so kindly SB! I feel humbled by your comment. I'm most certainly happy it helped someone. I'm still learning myself you know.

It feels good to be fairly close to on our feet again too. Taking care of my elderly mother (she's 77 tomorrow so everyone say HAPPY BIRTHDAY) with Alzheimer's has had it's toll on me and her to say the least. But I feel like it's the right thing to do, even if I don't do it well.

I quit work to take care of her. Lost seniority with the company I was with, and 3.5 yrs later ended back with the same company (though a different casino) literally within 72 hrs of being on the street, and losing all worldly possessions.

It's even harder now since I have to be gone 8-12 hrs a day and with nobody watching her (can't afford help). But we're hanging in there.

I would have never come here to 420mag either had it not been for caring for her. I don't indulge, and haven't in 35 years, since I was a teenager. This community has taught me a lot. And continues to do so. I can only hope I am able to pass a little bit on to help someone else in the journey.

**On defoliation, I'm learning too. I'll probably start bending any day now as the need arises and as I defoliate. These girls need lots and lots of room to grow. I held them back last grow. And tons of light. I'm about to go work on the setup now since my harvest is curing and see if I can get these girls into the RDWC config I want. If I get it right, I'll do a res change today into the rdwc and my tent with the T5-HO. Then I'll be ready for flower when it's time with just a light swap and proper nutrients.

Come along for the ride on this one and we'll learn some more on defoliation!
