TealAtlas: Soil, Dark Angel, 2020, First Grow

Day 14... we made it to veg!

I popped a few new seeds into some Rapid Rooters to see if I could get some additional germination. 3/6 of the seeds were soaked and stuck into some wet paper towels for a few days and then planted in the Rapid Rooters, and the other half were placed directly in. The newest technique is displayed below, a heat pad under a germination tray and a humidity dome. Fingers are crossed.

Meanwhile, our two star performers are living life pretty well. They're still on 16/8, and of course being watered as needed. Since I think they're still too big for their pots, I'm not giving them a full drench since I want aeration, so I'm trying to water in a concentrated area directly around them, letting them dry, repeat.

Since they're already in Fox Farms Ocean Forest, I'm not going to add any nutes for another week or two.

I'm not sure what the best kind of training method is that is good for a first time grower, so I'm doing my research on that as well... some sort of low stress modified manifolding would be great. Open to suggestions.

Finally, here are a few more family photos:

The reason would be a typo. 18/6.
Ahh LOL wow that got me thinking you must really know your plant! Asking because im sure my one plant only is awake 8-10 hours otherwise its limp and sleeping

What’s your light height again? I know we talked about this before, but it’s still got me thinking:lot-o-toke:

It was at 14" just moved it up to 17"....is this maybe why it limps so quickly?

3rd week in flower i believe
Yeah man, could very well be. In veg I like to keep my light at 24” above canopy. Then closer to 18 for flower.

generally when the plants look to be working away from the light, the lights too close. You want them to be working towards the light. Sorry if I could like a broken record haha :smokin:

Day 18

I made some changes to the light distance since we were on the topic, and now it's at about 27" or so above. I think it was closer to 18" previously and that may have stunted some growth. Hoping that this jump-starts some climbing.

Meanwhile it's another good day for the fam.

Day 21

Pretty significant growth on one of the two; the other one looks like it's slowly coming out of some stunted growth. I don't have a ton of faith in that one, but the other one is showing some fairly vigorous growth. Light is at 24". They've been in FFOF for about three weeks now, so I'm going to start feeding a half-quantity dose of the Fox Farms nutrient trio (starting with Big Bloom) with the next watering. I'll likely repeat feedings at half strength every third watering until I feel comfortable adding more and moving on with the trio.

Meanwhile, here are updated family photos:

Day 22

As you can see on Day 21's post, there's a bit of yellow coloring to some of the lower and outer leaves of the larger plant. After some ongoing research, it's what I assume to be pH issues/nutrient deficiency. Since (the end of) week 1, I'd been watering with appropriately pH'd water, so I was a little confused by this. I did some testing, and it looks like the bag of Ocean Forest that I got consistently pH's at 5 or so. Not cool. This prompted me to pH test runoff, which came back at around 5.5. I've read online to add dolomite lime to the soil composition when I repot to buffer the pH to 7 over a period of weeks, so I have some of that. But in the meantime, I'm just pHing the water ever so slightly higher than 7 to offset things. Hopefully that brings things back in check.

One thing I don't know if I ever noted is that I'm watering with RO. I'm sure that makes a difference in mineral content... I'm not sure if I need a bottle of cal-mag or not. I think I may buy it just to be safe anyway.

Family photos, injuries and all:

Day 25

Finally transplanted the larger girls into 5-gal fabric pots last night. Mixed about a half cup of dolomite lime per ~5gal into the same 33% perlite, 66% FFOF mixture. Light is at ~28in from canopy. Gave them a nice full drench, and they seem to be handling the transplant pretty well. I'm keeping a pretty strict eye on them today. Ordered some Cal-Mag and will probably be supplementing with it as soon as it comes in. Previous light burn/deficiency issues/whatever-it-was seems to have been resolved, new growth looks pretty great to me as of now.

The next thing that I have yet to do is training. I'm still doing some research and I'd love to get that started soon!

Some black electrical tape will probably cover the light for you rather then a towel.

The one plant looks to be showing (what looks like) a ph fluctuations. It could very well be a calcium deficiency as well. Let’s connect the dots. I’m leaning more towards a calcium def.
hopefully your cal mag shows up soon!

now for training. Me personally would allow them to grow taller before doing some tie downs. She’s just a lil too tiny yet for that. I mean you can grow her to the side, but the pay off over stress that can occur isn’t worth it to me. Are you topping the plants?
