Rider509: Two Thais & G13

Rider509 - Two Thais & G13

SHEDWARD! My journal cover photo is still Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Paybacks, buddy, paybacks. LOL

I guess it could be worse. Bwahahaha

Thought someone might like to see the GrowMau5 night lights. They run for 15 minutes after lights out to stimulate the sleep phytochromes and shut the plant down quicker. It lets me run 14/10. No bad juju (hermies) yet!

Just so I'm clear, you are running your room with 14 hours of light but the plants think they're at or past the autumnal equinox because you hit them with red night-lights? From an evolutionary standpoint (if that fits in with your worldview), why would plants have that mechanism built into their cells? The things people discover to get bigger/better plants!

It has something to do with the way the sunlight red-shifts through the atmosphere as it goes down that triggers the chemical reaction to switch gears from day to night. I suppose that it evolved to differentiate the onset of night from a cloudy day. As long as we can use it to our advantage!

edit: to answer your Q, Shed, yes, I'm running the lights 14 on and 10 off. The red lights are supposed to transition the plants to night mode faster so they still have time to do whatever the hell plants do at night.

Great explanation! Never thought of the red spectrum sunset connection. Well done.

Holy moly. That goes against everything you read on indoor growing. Even more against the growers who go the other way and go fewer and fewer hours of light over the course of flower. That red light thing must be putting them to sleep 2 hours faster than 12/12 without it.

Thanks Rider! You certainly are pushing boundaries.

That's nice of you to say but certainly not true. During my research on the 730mn red lights I found that some people were experimenting with it four or five years ago. It was kinda weird to read posts by GrowMau5 from before he was a YouTube icon. He was trying to get his head around stuff from people who were truly pushing boundaries.

Oh no, I meant like walls and ceiling boundaries ;).

Well I'll dial it back then...you're using scientific grow techniques that seem to go beyond most of what indoor growers currently do. Either way I'm glad I subbed in the beginning for the RDWC porn!

Nice :thumb:

Is it the ''puck'' thing? How many of them are you running?

When we talk about putting the plants to sleep fast, should we not also consider how to wake them up fast?

:passitleft:

Oh yeah, also gotta say FRAU BLÃœCHER ;)

Shhhh! You'll scare the horses!
They're the (CENSORED) pucks sold by (CENSORED) and I'm running two of them. Four would likely be better for that space. I can't even tell you if they have an impact. If you want to wake the plants up fast hit them right in the face with 1000ppfd!

Ok I have a thought......

If you think about the red lights they use at a restaurant to keep food warm. Now is this same light penetrating the leaves somewhat to warm them internally that we are not aware of that is causing this? Maybe this internal warming thins the juices to allow it to start the return to roots sooner and also to start the other way faster in the morning.

Those stems are carrying a lot of weight.

That's why there are 20 or more yoyos hanging from light bars and the lights! I didn't completely delarf it so there are a ton of small buds, but the few big ones in there just blow me away. Can't wait to cut them down. :)

Thats just crazy Rider. Really.

It's complete madness! I am so thankful for your generosity, Scrogdawg. Seriously, thank you. And thanks to Weaselcracker who bred these beasts, and Nivek for sharing the wealth shared with him. This forum family is amazing.

Now I want to do it again! And I will because I have clones. Woo hoo! :slide:
