I did look at those as well and one review said they did work for gnats. He broke it up into pieces and watered it in. It was only one review and it didn't specifically state gnats. However, you're number two now, so in da cart day go!

10lbs DE for $35 or 2lbs for $26. Keep in mind when weighing out your suggestions I get a free scoop in the 2lb bag.
DE doesn't work when wet, so I think it's less effective than gnat-nix.

I think it would be a conbo of what Pman said. DE mixed with perlite. I'll add the MB's(not to be confused with Magical Butter machines) first, water, then top dress with perlite/DE. After I'll add the DE on top of existing perlite after watering.
