Hi everyone!
I had an idea earlier this year. I decided it would be interesting to take a strain, and grow it with its parent strains.
To that end, I'm growing Do si dos #33 from @Barney's Farm alongside a Do si dos, and a Gelato.
I'll be growing these in my 60x120cm tent, under the @ViparSpectra XS2000.
This will be a hempy grow, with MC and mag nitrate as nutrients.
I also have some @Remo Nutrients magnifical if needed.

Here are the strain details.

Something I didn't say yesterday, those seeds were actually planted in the perlite 24 hours before I started this journal.
I had intended to wait until I had a sprout, but I was impatient.
As it turns out, so we're they!
36 hours after planting, no soak.

So, planting straight into the perlite is fast, but it has its hazards 😬
Both Do si dos, and Do si dos #33 pushed themselves up a bit further than intended, and they both still have their helmets on.
For DSD, I just piled up the perlite to support the taproot/stem, but for DSD #33 I had to dig a hole and place her into it as if I had germinated her in a paper towel.
I've given them a spritz of water, and they're under a dime keeping them in a very humid environment. That should help them sort things out.
Gelato has popped out a taproot, but hasn't broken the surface yet. I couldn't get a pic that shows it, as the camera focussed on the surface of the perlite. It'll probably be up later today.

Hey Mel, I'm glad you got up and running speedily and I am looking forward to this interesting comparative grow
Thanks Carmen, and welcome!
Well hello there sailor… 😂
Glad to see you here Nick!

When I tried germinating in perlite I often had helmet head. Perlite too light to provide enough scraping pressure maybe?
Yeah, and I think I need to plant them a little deeper, and positioned so the taproot can get down a bit further before pushing against the perlite.
I might go back to the paper towels in the future, or maybe peat pods. I understand that some hempy growers use them, or rapid rooters, and just bury it in the perlite.

And now Gelato has reached the surface.
Gelato
I'll start poking at things with a pin or knife (gently) if the helmets aren't coming off on their own by evening.

On the plus side, you'll get pretty good at helmet removal....👍

Maybe an inch of soil, on top of the perlite?
so, like Azi said, they get that helmet-scraping action on the way up...

Of course, if you're gonna do that, I guess you might as well just start them in soil...🤔

and they're under a dime keeping them in a very humid environment.
I actually looked for a coin.:hmmmm:.then I realized they're under a dome...which makes a lot more sense.🤪

I'm a Barneys Farmer this run also- it's hard to beat their genetics🌱

I mean, honestly, I’m not gonna read a better line than that on the forum tonight. From a grower as good as they come.

Made me smile, laugh and smirk - whilst being proper true

Ta Carcass. - much love, and crossed legs 😂

Looking good so far, Mel. I'll happily follow along.
Thanks HG!
Happy to have you here!

Welcome Carcass!
Yeah, so far we're 2 for 5 seeds planted in perlite that were able to shed the helmets on their own so far. I am thinking the jiffy pods are my best bet.
Lol, yeah a dome, autocorrect strikes again!
So far Barney's and Seedsman are the two companies I have a 100% sprout record with! (Knock on wood)
and crossed legs 😂
:hmmmm:

So, I wasn't planning on putting any more pics up tonight, but since I'm here...
Do si dos had loosened her helmet enough that it didn't take much to get it off, and DSD #33 had gotten it off on her own, although she hadn't dropped it yet.
I'll give Gelato a chance to get it off by herself overnight.
