Cherry Pie Root Porn

Here’s a trick with Airpots I tried this grow for the first time, and it worked great. You can see it had the desired effect. All I did was to set the base of the Airpot one hole higher than normal. This left about 2-3” of space under the pot. Then, I intentionally watered to runoff every watering. I left the runoff in the drip tray in an attempt to see if they would feed top and bottom. And indeed they do. This is why I’m certain an auto can and will filll a 10. I even got roots all the way to the surface of the soil this time. Easy to get the roots down, harder to get them to grow up. Thanks for the dark trick on that, @Gee64.

Theoretically, with a deep enough reservoir, you could increase the amounts of space under the pot to 5-6” and have the easiest coco/hydro thing ever.

So @Gee64, this grow also tested your theory that weed grows better in taller pots vs shorter. I wasn’t sold when you said that. So these Airpots are the tallest 7s I’ve ever used - 14”. Compared to 11” and way wider on the cloth pots. Now we see how the taller pot did. I broke the ball up with my hands to see inside the ball. What I *think* I found is that in a taller pot, it appears the roots dive bomb the bottom, almost as if they’re searching for it. I had lots of long, thin roots going top to bottom. In a shorter pot I find the root mass is denser. Which is better? Idk! Lol.

The only way to really tell is to rinse the rootballs and weigh them to see which had more roots.

The tall pot vs wide pot is just something I have seen mentioned a few times, but never tested on autos. You would be the guy to be able to see if its an advantage😎👊.

Morning @rehabilitatora420 - how you be? Ready for a demo? I did some stuff today that’s important.

So today was the day I chose to take all the little shoots from under the canopy that had to come off (tiny bullshit shoots that would never make the canopy, easily identified), as well as some that might be okay but I chose to take. The point of doing this, like we’ve talked about, is to get the plant to focus its energy on just the sweetass colas and branches we are going for here. By taking this garbage and selected other growth, she will no longer waste energy growing them. All of it goes to our prizes. Easy concept, right? Kinda fun too deciding what to take and what not to.

Anyway, the first thing I did was what I do every couple days - evened out the canopy. This might mean lowering or raising (preferably raising) a branch so all the colas are flat. You understand that the point of this is so that all the colas get equal light, yes? You can be as OCD as you want about it. Frankly, I’m fairly fanatical about it when I’m serious. In this case I’m doing it laser flat (SUPER OCD, lol) so I can show you. Often I’m moving branches 1/2 or 1/4”. See?

Then I took the crap shoots from below, leaving me this nice clean undercarriage. It’s kinda hard to see cuz the leaves and such, but look at how nice and stripped the branches are, and note that only took the shoots. NOT THE LEAVES. KEEP THE LEAVES.

Then cleaned up the main ring of colas. What I want is no little shoots coming out from underneath, and then also the right amount of side branching left. Here are some colas where you can see how I took the outer and under stuff, and kept the pair of nice side branches at the top. Those will fill in the space between the colas or head towards the middle to fill it out.

And in this last shot I arrowed a clear example of what I mean by “coming from underneath.” If you keep these type shoots they make those little single bud hangers we discussed before. Your choice to keep or not. I killed them.

This is going to make our colas FAT. Especially with an indica. You saw the undercarriage on my Cherry Pie just harvested. That’s the sorta thing we’re going for. With way less middle buds so she’s not all packed together as the CP was.

Okay?

Skywalker Trichomes

I swear they do it to me on purpose just to F with me. My goddamn plants never seem to want to finish.

They're too happy. You gotta give them some tough love like the rest of us. Mine are all too happy to move on to the next life.

We have a few Cherry Pie buds that were dry enough to do a final trim on and break down a little. Still a day or day and a half away (the few first day branches I took Monday, about a week dry by tomorrow). Would be nice to get ten days instead of seven, but it is what it is. Here’s approximately what they buds look like, as seen under the XS 1500 Pros.

Northern Lights Auto
Day 42

This girl has blossomed out quite nicely. Very cooperative plant that takes to training real well. Very attractive strain for sure. I’m doing just the bare minimum at this point - just keeping the canopy even. In a couple days when the Beast is gone, I will crank up the light. The NL is only at about 600 ppfd to this point.

Flower Day 86

If I had known she was going to take this long to finish, I would have fed her one more time. She’s still maybe three days out. Jeesh. Looks pretty good for her age I think.

Trim Progress

These were the primes of prime. I usually begin with them. They were also the biggest and the ones I was concerned about bud rot with the most. And even with a universe of moving air from all directions, a few of these buds had the very beginning of bud rot inside. Not enough to kill a single top, and it was all cut out. But I probably lost maybe a quarter to a half ounce dried. There is maybe 2 ounces more of this level of bud still hanging but these were the first two batches. Not jar ready, but box and final trim ready. Jar tomorrow at some point most likely, and box the rest.

Here’s where I am on the final trim so far. She won’t be 12-14, there was simply too much flarfy light green stuff in the middle that’s drying for kief. They were simply packed way too tight. Had I known they were going to go nuts, I would have spread them out more, but it was too late by the time it became apparent - the branches were steel rods. Still she will be close to ten I think. This is about a 1/4 pound.
