Some clip them (I have), for a few reasons. 1. It can slow them a day or so if you need to buy some time to let others catch up, and 2. it encourages other roots lurking in there to pop on out making for more-explosive growth once they hit dirt...which I can attest to as well.
But, once there are a few poking out, sprinkle some roots powder on that sucker and pop it in a starter.
